A FEW OF MY FAVORITE THINGS : AKA STOCKING STUFFERS : CHRISTMAS 2019

You don't have to spend a lot of money to give a great gift. The following items are integral to my daily routines. I am sure you, too, have favorites that are indispensable.  Here are mine, and the ones I like to gift to loved ones.

1) O'Keefe's Lip Repair-$3.99 Amazon or Target. Great for extremely cracked and chapped lips.

2) Pacifica Glow Baby Booster Serum-$16.00 at Ulta. Infused with glycolic acid and vitamin c. Mix a few drops into your moisturizer. Instantly glows and brightens your skin. My favorite!

3) Aquafor Advanced Therapy Body Spray-$12.29 Amazon. Extremely healing but a bit greasy. Let it soak in before putting on your clothes. Great for healing wounds or cuts.

4)Vaseline Intensive Care Spray-$6.00 at any drugstore. Perfect just out of the shower for both men and women. Non greasy and keeps your skin moisturized throughout the cold winter. The Best!

5) Clinique All About The Eyes-$33 at all department stores. Lightweight eye cream that relieves puffiness and circles. Use at night and in the morning. Make sure to buy the gel and not the cream.
For anyone who has issues with their eyes, this should be your go to. Hypo allergenic.

6) Cremo Original Shave Cream-$1.99 at drugstores, Target, and Amazon. The perfect shaving cream for the men in your life. Once you use it, you'll stop using your other brand.

7) Prada Infusion D'Iris Eau de Toilette-$160 at high end department stores. A pricier stocking stuffer but the most beautiful scent. The toilette is just the right intensity and not too strong. I am not a fan of any perfume. I much prefer the lighter toilette version- it's alluring but not overpowering.

8) Sistema Microwave Cups-$49.00 for a set of six at Amazon. Each comes in a pretty individual box. They are great for soups, chili, and hot drinks. There is a vented cover that locks. No more explosions in your microwave. Divide them up and give them out to 6 friends. Great for the workplace.

9) Bobby Brown Beach Hand and Body Cream-$39 at Net A Porter. It's very hard to find. Seems to be in great demand. As soon as you dab it on, you are transported to a sandy beach. It's divine. Keep searching for it-it's worth it!

10) Dr. Brandt Oxygen Facial Recovery Mask-$70 at Sephora. This could be my favorite product! Apply to wet skin after the shower. In 3 minutes, you skin is reinvigorated! It's fabulous-use it once a week.

11) Loreal Magic Root Coverup-$7.00 All drugstores. My "go to" for my gray roots. In between color appointments, I spritz it on my part and hairline. Gets me through until I get back to the salon.

12) Versed Twice As Nice Serum Rolling Gift Set-$16.99 at Target. Includes roller and anti aging serum and brightening serum. Such a wonderful stocking stuffer.

13) Orolay Down Jacket-$139 at Amazon.  OMG - my friend turned me on to this yummy warm coat. (Thanks Robyn!).  You will never feel the cold again! Tons of pockets for gloves, phone, wallets. Comes in lots of colors. It's fun, cute, warm, and perfect for long walks. It's the BEST.

14) Almay Smart Shade CC Luminous Primer SPF 15-$8.99 at all drugstores. I am obsessed with this primer. I dot it on my face with a little foundation and sponge it on. Instant glow. Just as great alone on your bare skin. You'll look well rested, even if your not.

15) Tretinoin Cream 0.05 % (Retin A)-You need a script from your dermatologist. Use several times a week at night. I mix it with my moisturizer. It helps renew your skin, removes sun damage, and keeps you looking young.
Everyone should be using it!

16) Silk 'n Revit Microderm Kit-$99 on Amazon. I was given this kit years ago from my daughter. I use it at least once a week. It comes with three different heads and it aids in removing blackheads, age spots, and dead skin. In between your microderm treatments at the dermatologist, this helps maintain your skin. Love it.

Wishing Everyone A Happy Chanukah, A Very Merry Christmas, And A Happy and Healthy New Year. May we all spend more time appreciating what is right in front of us-We all have lots to be thankful for.  PEACE OUT-ONE B

"AGE IS RARELY KIND TO ANYONE. ONE JUST HAS TO GET ON WITH IT!" (FROM THE CROWN)

I haven't checked in with you in a long while. With the passing of my Dad in September, came the onset of heart failure in my 92 year old Mom. On November 4th, I retrieved her from her hospital bed. Four days later, I had put her house on the market, I had arranged for the house to be packed up and cleared out, and I swooped her onto the plane (she was half dead and I was praying the whole way home she would survive the flight). We arrived in N.J. on November 7th, and I drove directly to a rehab facility where she slowly regained her strength. Miraculously, two weeks later, I was able to move her into an assisted living facility. The good news is that she seems to be doing okay. In fact, I am amazed and proud at what a trooper she has been. It has been three months since she lost her husband, closed her beloved home and transitioned to a rehab facility, and then again to a new apartment at Brandywine. It has been rough ride.
I, however, am completely overwhelmed, overworked, underpaid, and literally having a bit of a breakdown. I miss my grandchildren terribly. I have spent almost every day for the last 4 weeks on the phone for several hours fighting with Insurance Companies, reenrolling in Part D plans in NJ, paying bills, picking up prescriptions, making deposits in various accounts, and generally fighting with a zillion people about address changes, stopping phone service, television service, and newspaper service, long term care benefits, and questioning the realtor on updates of the Condo sale, etc.  And when I am not doing these things, I am with my mom advocating for her at a doctor appointment, buying her groceries, shower curtains, shoes, loveseats, or bringing her to CVS, and on other various errands. I, literally get out of bed  at 5 to hit the gym before spending the greater part of my day righting her ship!
I used to see my five precious grandchildren several times a week but I don't have that luxury right now. This fact makes me very depressed and anxious. They are the joys of my life. I am hoping that as the months go on, mom will become more independent and not rely on my services as much. And, I will be able to transition back to helping my daughters more and start to see my grandchildren as much as I did before my mom moved here. Or is this my new normal?
In the meantime, I still don't sleep. As Thomas Edison said, "sleep is a waste of time."
As you all know, the panacea for my sleeplessness and my mode of decompression has been visual outlets for the past few years (and vodka!). Sadly, I don't have the ability to concentrate on reading books right now. I am hoping that, too, will change again. So here is what I've recently been viewing.

TELEVISION
The Morning Show-Amazon Prime. Pretty entertaining. And NOONE rocks a little black dress like Aniston. Reese Witherspoon is fabulous and the show is really "The Matt Lauer Story". Worth watching.

Mrs. Fletcher-HBO. Soooo much sex-you won't believe it!! I love Kathryn Hahn. She is a recent divorcee who explores lots of erotic possibilities now that she's single. Love it!

Succession-HBO. The second season was even better than the first. All the characters have so much depth. Brian Cox and Kieran Culkin are my favorites.  It's the story of an elderly patriarch running a large company and figuring out what the future holds for the company and his family. Great!

The Kominsky Method-Netflix. This is the second season. Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin are amazing. However, I enjoyed the first season much more. This season it was a little ho hum and boring. But for those of you who enjoyed the first season, you'll want to watch.

Modern Love-Amazon. Six different episodes based on the N.Y. Times Sunday Column. I especially liked the last episode about an elderly woman and man who meet running and fall in love. Very well done.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel-Amazon. Season 3 rocks! I am loving every second. I didn't love season 2, but the writing has been spectacular this season. I love the scene at the pool at the Fontainebleau in Florida. Suzie sums up my feelings about Florida perfectly!

And, of course, I continue to watch Ray Donovan (SHO), Shameless (SHO), The Good Doctor (ABC)-LOVE THIS SHOW! Just beginning to watch The L Word and Work In Progress (Both just starting on SHO).

BROADWAY SHOWS

Hadestown-Completely amazing. Loved the acting, the songs, the story, and the staging. So worth seeing! Mesmerizing. Read the story first, before you see it.

Tina-Adrienne Warren is beyond fabulous as Tina. The little girl who plays Tina as a child steals the show and is immensely talented. The show is fun and enjoyable completely due to the incredibly talented cast. The show itself was ok, but it didn't matter as long as someone was singing!
An uplifting night that will leave you smiling.

MOVIES

JoJo Rabbit-GO!
Knives Out-GO! Fun, well done mystery. Great cast.
The Irishman-Watch at home on Netflix. 3 1/2 hours. Hated it!
A Beautiful Day in The Neighborhood-Fair. Liked the documentary much better than the movie.
Motherless Brooklyn-Go! Liked it.
Marriage Story-Very good and you can watch it on Netflix. Adam Driver is great!
Harriet-Cynthia Erivo is always amazing. Movie was poorly done though. Good to watch at home.

LOVE ALWAYS MOM-Amazon. This was a life changing documentary for me. Very difficult to watch. Tricia Gonnella Russo, whose family lived around the corner from us in Short Hills, documents her journey of trying to become a mom while dealing with the tragic diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer. She is such an incredible young woman who navigates her life in an inspiring and heroic way. Totally worth viewing.
Do not miss this!

Until the next time-
Wishing you and your families a Happy and Healthy New Year!
Peace Out-OneB

The Passing of My Dad

As most of you know, I lost my Dad several weeks ago. For 93 of his 95 years, he led a pretty terrific life. He was a great guy who loved life. He had a desire and an intense curiosity to learn no matter how old he was. He also enjoyed music, Broadway shows, crossword puzzles, good food,  travel, golf, and nice clothes; but, most of all he loved people. He had the gift of gab; although, he was rarely frivolous. He did, however, take a certain delight in being a bit provocative...Peck's bad boy! Everyone loved him too-he instantly lit up every room he entered. He was a beloved dentist and diagnostician who enjoyed conversing with his patients, just as much as he enjoyed excelling in the art of Dentistry.
He was a liberal-minded man who taught me to love all types of people. Everyone has something special to offer, and we are all equal and entitled to respect. There was zero prejudice at our dinner table. There was no hate. There was no gossip. He exhibited empathy for those who were less fortunate and total acceptance for anyone who might be a little different. He did, however, expect honesty, respect, and straight A's! He made me a perfectionist who doesn't tolerate lies, bad behavior, or unkindness. As a result, I am a demanding parent and grandparent. I, too, expect others to be the best they can be. And yes, I do hold a grudge if someone's done me wrong. I will also let others know in what way they have upset me, and I will work hard to try and right it (but, only if you matter to me!).
Now that my Dad has passed, I am contemplating what, if any, lessons I can take from his death? It is devastating to think I won't talk with him anymore, or laugh with him. As I ponder all this, I realize that, although I feel overwhelmed and sad, we are all here on this planet to thrive; to live, to enjoy our spouses, children, grandchildren, and friends. Yes, Dad taught me that! So how can I thrive? How can I be a better person? A better spouse? A better Mom, Nonni, and friend?
1)  I have come to realize that it is key is to focus on the present. Don't worry so much about the "What if's."  Live more in the moment-Enjoy what's happening now. Don't fret so much about tomorrow. Stop and smell the roses.....This is hard, especially for an anal, organized perfectionist! But, I'm working on it.
2) I don't always need to maintain a stiff upper lip. Repressing feelings only makes things worse. I can let people know if I'm having a tough time. Don't feel the need to hide your sorrow or disappointment. It's ok to have a breakdown every now and then!  And, welcome the comfort of others.  It can be replenishing!
3) Most of all, I need to nurture myself. I can't always try to accommodate everyone else's needs at the expense of my own. Unfortunately, this has been my MO for my entire life. It's hard for me to say no without feeling a tremendous amount of guilt. I have to acknowledge that I am no good to anyone if I am not ok mentally and physically. So, I have started saying "no" and trying not to feel guilty about it. I hope those who love me understand that, at this time in my life, I need to take a few moments for just me.  Self care is not selfish.
My Dad's death has made me acutely aware of my own mortality and it's caused me to contemplate how my children will deal with my aging process. It is not an easy road. My next journey is navigating my 92 year old Mom to New Jersey from her home in Florida. This is as difficult for her as it is for me. It takes love, time, planning, patience and prayer. And possibly Xanax or Vodka (just not together). For now, I am trying hard to focus on one day at a time. I want to concentrate on celebrating my parents wonderful marriage of 72 years, and the happy and fun childhood they gave me. I want to celebrate my Dad's spectacular and long life, and be thankful that I had him around for 65 years of mine.

Peace Out-One B

Cucina di Clemenza-    Not a fan of these 3. I wouldn't bother.
Cara Mia-

There is also Tillie's which is fine, as a Millburn option with some good entrees, and Par 440 which is more bar than food worthy.

LIVINGSTON
There is a lack of good restaurants in this town.
Marra's-18 E. Mt. Pleasant Ave. Passable Italian. Nothing special. BYO.

Mezza-277 Eisenhower Pkwy. Love the Mediterranean options at lunch. Wish they would have them on the dinner menu. Don't like the upscale dinner options as much. BYO.

Nero's-618 S. Livingston Ave. Used to have the best drinks. Now you need to ask for an UP POUR to get the old sized drink. Food is always reliably good. Steaks, Salads, Chicken dishes, and Dessert are worth a tumble. But the real reason to go to Nero's is the staff-They are Fabulous and always make it the best evening!

Highlawn Pavillion-1 Crest Drive. On the other end of the spectrum from Star Tavern. Upscale American in a beautiful setting and great NYC views.  Or Go to the Bar and eat lighter fare, which is more up my alley. And a lot more fun.

Julio's-459 Mt. Pleasant Ave. Julio always makes a great drink.  He cooks great food and is a great Host. Older crowd comes early!

Labretti's-554 Nassau Street, Orange. Food just ok. But the karaoke is fun every Friday and Saturday night from 8pm-1am.

Primavera Ristorante is no longer (thank goodness). There will only be the Trattoria at 500 Pleasant Valley Way. This is the better of the two. There is a full bar. Lots of seafood and pasta. My friends all like the Trattoria. I am not a fan and avoid meeting there for dinner.

Chit Chat Diner-410 Eagle Rock Ave. This is touted as the best diner in New Jersey. I think the food is fair, the portions are small, and the prices are high. It is open 24 hours. Every time I have gone, I have been very disappointed. Not good (in my opinion).

BEST DINER IN THE UNIVERSE IS:
Tops Diner-500 Passaic Ave. East Newark (Harrison). Every dish under the sun. All very good. Open all night. Lines are out the door on weekends.

BEST PIZZA IN NEW JERSEY IS:
Star Tavern or Angeloni's. I am told Columbia Inn in Montville makes a great pizza too.

BEST CHICKEN SALAD IS:
Oscar's in Millburn.

BEST SLOPPY JOE IS:
A tie between Nana's and Town Hall.  Millburn Deli makes great sandwiches too!

BEST SUB SANDWICH;
Chatham Sandwich Shop  and Sorrento's in East Hanover

BEST STEAK IN THE AREA:
Not sure? Roots or Sammy's or River Palm or Sear or Rails or Nero's?

BEST BURGER IS:
Serenade in Chatham

BEST CHINESE IS:
Hunan Taste in Montclair and Denville

BEST INDIAN IS:
Brick Lane in Montclair

BEST VEAL DISH IS:
Veal Pricipesa at Davina

BEST CHICKEN DISH IS:
Chicken Savoy at Miele's in Verona

Let's go eat! Peace Out! OneB

It's been a while....

The summer is quickly coming to an end, and I've had complaints that I have been MIA. In the blink of an eye, camp ends, kids go back to school, and the fall routines kick in.  I can honestly say that I can't wait. Enjoy the final days of summer. And, when you have a few minutes you can check out some of the below recommendations.

MUSIC
This summer I heard a  young woman named Maggie Rogers. She sounds like this generation's Joni Mitchell. Go to you tube and listen to "Alaska" and "Light On". Then buy her music! You won't be disappointed. Pharrell Williams discovered her.

BOOKS CURRENTLY ON MY NIGHTTABLE
Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney
Normal People by Sally Rooney
There's a Word for That by Sloan Tanen
Evvie Drake Starts Over by Linda Holmes
Chances Are-by Richard Russo (his first novel in a decade).

WHAT I'M WATCHING ON TELEVISION
Succession-HBO. Sunday at 9. The second season just started. Aging patriarch of an international media company is deciding to either sell or turn the helm over to one of his 4 children. It's Great!

The Movies-CNN. Sunday at 9 or on demand. This is FABULOUS. Watch clips and interviews of directors and stars and their movies. Everyone has a favorite scene and they cover so many movies. The series is divided into the Golden Age, The 60's, The 70's, the 80's, the 90's and the 2000's. This is a must for movie buffs.

Pose-FX or Netflix.  A 1980's Dance Musical . Billy Porter stars, and it won the golden globe for Best TV Series. Subject matter explores the Trump era, the literary and social scene, and LGBTQ youth who have not been accepted by their families.  You decide...

Four Weddings and a Funeral-HULU. Mindy Kaling has done a remake of the original movie and turned it into a mini series. A light rom-com.

Burton and Taylor-PBS on demand. Just watched this movie by accident. Interesting to learn about their tumultuous love affair. Starring Helena Bonham Carter and Dominic West. I enjoyed it.

Diagnosis-Netflix. This is right up my alley. A documentary series that is based on the New York Times Column by Dr. Lisa Sanders. It's a medical mystery series and it's mesmerizing. She is the Dr. who inspired the television series House.

COMING TO TELEVISION IN THE FALL

The Morning Show-Apple TV. Sounds interesting-a series about the morning news shows. Starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon.

IN THE MOVIES NOW OR COMING SOON

After The Wedding-Directed by Bart Freundlich. Starring Billy Crudup, Michelle Williams, and Julianne Moore. This is a gender swap remake of the 2006 After the Wedding. I haven't seen it and it has received mixed reviews.

Blinded By The Light-British teen of Pakistani descent finds himself through the music of Springsteen. Directed by Gurinder Chadha, who directed Bend It Like Beckham. Out this weekend and it looks really great.

Where'd You Go Bernadette?-also out this weekend. Based on the novel, it has an all star cast. Cate Balanchett, Kristin Wiig, Billy Crudup, Laurence Fishburne, and Judy Greer. This didn't get good reviews, but I'm still interested. I liked the book.

The Goldfinch-Coming September 13th and I cannot wait! Based on one of my all time favorite novels by Donna Tartt, which won the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for fiction. Starring Luke Wilson, Nicole Kidman and Sarah Paulson. For me, this is a MUST SEE.

OK -LADIES THIS SECTION IS FOR YOU. WHAT I AM CURRENTLY TRYING IN MAKEUP:

Charlotte Tilbury Matt Revolution Pillow Talk $34. This is a nude lipstick that is for everyone. She makes great lipsticks and a nude is something most people want in their cosmetic bag.

Tatcha Silk Canvas Protective Primer $52. This is a basecoat that you use before applying your foundation. But this one doesn't clog your pores.

Hanacure Multi Action Mask $29. This is a Korean Facial mask filled with peptides and botanicals. A tightening mask that instantly makes your skin look tighter and younger. This is an instagram sensation-all the stars use it. It's worth the money-try it before a special event.

Now for the adults relaxation! There are so many things to watch this summer-no lack of great TV.

My Favorites:

Years and Years-HBO on Monday nights. Fabulous story of a family, politics, Trump, War. etc. Emma Thompson is great and it's only 6 episodes. I recommend it highly.

Perpetual Grace-Epix. Starring Ben Kingley who is a Pastor, married and robs congregants that put their faith in him. There is a vindictive son who wants his father's stolen money. It's a complicated story line. Quirky, brilliant, a bit like Pulp Fiction and very intriguing. Kingsley is a master.
More than highly recommend this!!

Stranger Things-Netflix. This season started but I haven't begun to watch. I liked all previous episodes, so I am sure I will enjoy these as well.

Younger-TVland. My dirty little secret. Tweens watch this and love it. I can't get enough of Sutton Foster who works for a publishing company and her new love, Peter Herman. He is my tv crush. But he's married to Mariska Hargitay from Law and Order. So I'll have to dream. Also, there is a great supporting cast with Hillary Duff, Debi Mazar, and Miriam Schorr.

Not so favorite, but I'm still watching:

Yellowstone-Paramount on Wednesdays. Stars Kevin Costner. About a prominent ranch Family with politics, big business, Native American conflict. Last Season was better.

Euphoria-HBO Sunday. Zendaya is a 17 year old drug addict just out of rehab trying to stay straight amongst the social stresses of high school. I like this but not for anyone who is not into teen angst. And guys will not like it either.

Big Little Lies-HBO Sunday. In all honesty, I am not enjoying the second season. The only redeeming factor is Meryl Streep. I find the storyline tedious and boring. You decide.

The Loudest Voice-SHO. Russell Crowe plays Roger Ailes. I can't stand Ailes but this is an all star cast with Naomi Watts, Sienna Miller, and Seth Macfarlane, so I will eventually watch it.

City On A Hill-SHO. Kevin Bacon stars as a dirty cop in Boston. The show is horrible. Don't bother-but I'm still watching.

Grand Hotel-If you liked Dynasty, you'll like this. Lots of Drama - Night time soap opera. EH.

Queen Sugar-Own. About a Black Farming Family and the dynamics of the siblings. Ava Duvernay  wrote this. It's in its second season and I do like it!

COMING SOON:

The Plot Against America- HBO.Based on Philip Roth's book and filmed in Newark and Elizabeth. It will be a mini series in April.

Ozark-Netflix. Great Great show. Coming back for season 3 in November.

Now Let's Go Eat!

Revolution 9-South Street. Morristown. Craft beers, German inspired pub food. Cool space

OK or OY VAY

Summertime and the livin' is easy! You've hiked, walked, swam, golfed, played tennis and now you want to chill out with a good book on the beach, or sit in front of the television with a glass of rose' and chill.
You all know I think sleep is very overrated, so I use the wee hours to catch up on television and books.
Basically, this is a list for those who are searching for some new recommendations. Here you are:

TELEVISION

Ellen DeGeneres Relatable-Netflix. I haven't watched Ellen in years, but I saw her daytime show recently and she mentioned this special. I totally forgot how talented and brilliant she is. There is no offensive comedy-it's all just great! Highly recommend it.

Big Little Lies-HBO. The second season premiered last Sunday. Has an all star cast and truthfully, it's way better than the book by Laine Moriarty. The fabulous cast is joined by Meryl Stree which is an added bonus this season. Perfect for a Sunday night and a bowl of popcorn.

Perpetual Grace-Epix. Grifter preys upon a Pastor. Ben Kingsley and Jacki Weaver are not as innocent as they seem. Cool vibe and well written. Worth a tumble(weed!)-watch!

Tales of the City-Netflix. The acting is amazing. Starring Laura Linney, Olympia Dukakis, and Ellen Page. Plot is San Francisco in the 70's and revolves around the LGBTQ community. I watched all the episodes and liked it. But this isn't for everyone. Caution...

Dead To Me-Netflix. Christina Applegate stars in show about a grieving widow and a friend she meets at a support group. Men will not like this-Ladies, you will.

Animal Kingdom-TNT. In its fourth season, I am fully committed. As I have said before, Ellen Barkin is a female Tony Soprano, but not as likeable. She is the matriarch of a crime family and she is super scary. Not for the faint of heart, but I enjoy it.

Shtisel-Netflix. An Ultra Orthodox family in Jerusalem deals with problems of daily life: love, siblings, money, and jobs. For me, this is an OY VAY. Let me be clear-I am the only person I know that did not like this series. I felt it portrayed Jews in a horrible light and I was offended. Many of their community voiced hate for Gentiles (how is this different than Nazi Germany hating the Jews?) and felt they were an "evil" people. The Jewish women in these Orthodox families are often  portrayed as strong and domineering, forcing their men to obey insane whims (many of which were unreasonable and unkind- i.e. a  threatened fiancé forces her husband-to-be to fire his administrative assistant of many years, because she is a female). This was not a pleasant experience-I literally stayed up all night feeling agitated.

Fleabag-Amazon Prime. A woman trying to navigate dysfunctional familial relationships mostly by engaging in lots of sex. I liked this series a lot, especially because it focuses mostly on the relationship of two diametrically different sisters with a dry, witty humor.

The Restaurant- Amazon Prime. Season 2. I haven't watched this. Supposedly, it is a drama about a family owned restaurant beginning at the end of WWII and spanning 20 years. It is an ensemble being compared to Downtown Abbey. Sounds wonderful.

Saturday Night Politics with Donny Deutsch-MSNBC at 8pm.  A University of Penn Alum (yea!) that is liberal, smart, and fun to watch. I like him on Morning Joe and I like his interviews on this.

Ramy Youssef  "Feelings"- HBO.  If you enjoyed his fabulous series on Hulu, you will enjoy this New Jersey native's first comedy special. Premiering on June 29th. Must Watch-he is really superb and so was the series which has been renewed. A Muslim raised in Bergen County, he gives great insight as to what it feels like living in America in a post 911 world.

City On A Hill-SHO. Kevin Bacon. A 90's Boston Crime Drama complete with dirty cops. Produced by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. Premiers on June 16. Should be fun.

When They See Us-Created, written, and directed by Ava DuVernay. Starring John Leguziamo. This program exposes the criminal breakdown of our justice system and what really happened during the Central Park Five Case. I haven't watched this yet, but all reviews are good.

MOVIES

Rocketman-Starring Taron Egerton and Jamie Bell as Elton John and Bernie Taupin. Run, don't walk to this movie. Absolutely Magnificent. Two actors (I am not familiar with) pull off a musical triumph about Sir Elton John.

Always Be My Maybe-Netflix. Ali Wong, known for her comedy specials, stars in this romantic comedy about a chef and musician who reunite after 15 years. I haven't seen this but Ali Wong wrote the movie and her specials are beyond hysterical.

Los Espookys-HBO. Fred Armisen created this quirkey Spanish Language Comedy with English subtitles. About a group of friends who stage fake horror events for a living. Eccentric. Debuts this Friday, June 14. SNL fans will want to watch.

Yellowstone-Paramont Network. Kevin Cosner returns for season 2. Drama about the Patriarch of a prominent ranch family. Sex, Violence, and Cosner is easy on the eyes. I Like it.

BOOKS (Full Disclosure-I haven't read any of these books but they are on my summer list. They all sound like good beach reads).

The Farm-Joanne Ramos. About a luxury baby surrogacy farm for uber rich. About Class, Race, and Gender.

The Key To Happily Ever After-Tiff Marcelo. Three sisters trying to keep a family business from failing.

Daisy Jones and The Six-Taylor Jenkins Reid. Reese Witherspoon's pick for her March book club. Fictional 70's rock band rise and fall. All about sex, drugs, and rock and roll. What could be bad?

The Friends We Keep-Jane Green. College friends reunite after 30 years and go to live on a commune.

The City of Girls-Elizabeth Gilbert. The author of Eat, Pray, Love writes a third novel about  showgirls and playboys in the 40's.

Searching for Sylvia Lee-Jean Kwok.  A family saga about a Chinese immigrant who disappears in the Netherlands. This is Jenna Bush's pick for June. So far I have not liked the two previous books she picked. You Decide.

SOME FURTHER RECOMMENDATIONS

Sunscreen-You should apply sunscreen all year round and even if you are in the car or on an airplane by the window! I know that sounds dramatic, but it is true. My picks: La Roche Posay Anthelios 60 melt in sunscreen for $36. For a less expensive option try either Coppertone Ultraguard Continuous Spray Broad Spectrum 30 or Coppertone Water Babies Whipped 50 which has no fragrance, parabens or paba.

Retinol Product-Sunday Riley A+ Hign Dose Reitinol Serum. $85 at Sephora. I tried Skinceuticals retinol products and needed to return them due to major sensitivity. This doesn't irritate if you have sensitive skin. Follow usage instructions though!

Bobbi Brown's Evolution 18 Products-Brown sold her company and started a wellness supplement brand. She believes beauty starts from the inside. There are 10 simple ingestible beauty supplements: biotin gummies for hair, hydration tablets, peptide protein powder, collagen "shots", debloating teas and others all available at Walmart.

Coola Cool Mineral Liplux Spf 30 collection-available at Ulta and comes in 6 shades. Your lips need sunscreen and conditioning too. $18.

SPANISH DINER-10 Hudson Yards, NYC. I am a huge fan of diners and Jose Andres just opened one in Hudson Yards. I am dying to try all his eggy options! Currently open for breakfast and lunch, it will eventually be open for dinner. Not only is Andres an award winning chef but he is a great humanitarian who has fed many hurricane victims in Puerto Rico and the Carolinas. He deserves the success-GO! I can't wait!

Finally, I am not sure why the U.S. has not issued a "4" travel advisory for the Dominican Republic. Currently, the U.S.  has it at a "2" which means just to exercise increased caution if traveling there. (scale is 1-4{don't go!). Violent crimes such as armed robbery, homicide and sexual assault are major concerns there. This is NOT a place you want to go to for relaxation. You can't drink liquor from your own hotel minibar, or from the restaurant bar. Liquor is tainted. Deaths have occurred and as you know the gunman in the recent David Ortiz shooting was arrested for a plot to kill the former Red Sox star.
There are so many other places to vacation-I am begging you NOT to visit there. The U.S. should be vigilant in forbidding Americans from vacationing there. Use Caution wherever you travel!

Enjoy your summer, whatever you do! Peace Out-ONE B

OK or OY VAY

Here we are: Summertime and the livin' is easy. There is so much to do to stay active, if the weather permits. But from midnight until dawn, sleep is very overrated. So, instead, I catch up on shows and books. Many of these I haven't seen or read so this is basically just a list for those of you who may be interested.

MOVIES

Rocketman-Taron Egerton and Jamie Bell star in this amazing story of Elton John's life. Run!

WELCOME ROSS EVAN!

It's taken me a while to write about my newest grandchild, Ross.  This beautiful, precious, little boy was born on March 22nd. He is my fifth grandchild and the fourth boy! I am now surrounded by four very handsome boys and one exquisite princess!
Each and everyday with my grandchildren is a fun adventure.  Everything they do gives me joy. I can be in the most foul mood, or in the most depressed state, or notice an ache in my body that came out of nowhere... And then - whoosh- I enter one of my daughter's homes and miraculously, every issue in my life fades away. A smile instantly appears on my face.
I have the invaluable fortune of living in close proximity to both of my children. And I have the extra bonus of having daughters and son in laws that basically have an "open door policy" when it comes to the grandparents visits. In fact, they welcome all of us, and gladly go off to shower, nap, cook, exercise, run errands, work, or just take a minute to regroup. They are thrilled to have a few minutes where another set of capable hands can watch the kids.
I have to say that I was not "that" daughter to my parents or my in laws. I wanted some advance notice and didn't want unannounced visitors. Also, my parents and in laws were not as interested, involved, or as capable as Jud and me.  Yet, as a result of my own wishes, I now always call or text before going over. I don't want to take anyone or  anything for granted, and I never want to be taken for granted. I am sure there are times when my daughters just want me to leave and they have had enough of Nonni, but they have never made me feel unwelcome. I want them to know that I respect them, their spouses and their lives and in return, I want to know they have the same respect for us.
I have told my friends that being a grandparent has infinitely changed my life for the better. I adore my children and love being their mom. But being a parent is stressful ALL the time (even now). You never stop worrying about their health, their happiness, their friends, their education, their issues, money, jobs, homes-all of it is a concern at various stages of life.
As a grandparent, you have the privilege of watching your children parent. And that is such a miraculous experience!  It is an affirmation of the job we did in raising them.  They are highly capable, smart, and ironically, often, exhibiting similarities in our parenting styles, And sometimes, they are not!  But, however they choose to parent, they are truly GREAT at it! Thus, my reason for being a bit more relaxed about my grandchildren. My kids are crushing it...they have it all under control.
So Mr. Ross, I  want to welcome you to a world where so many people already adore you! I know you will always be well taken care of, cherished, and loved. I wish for you a long, wonderful healthy life filled with lots of happiness, fun, curiosity, knowledge, and kindness. I, for one, will do my part to ensure that you will have awesome adventures with your Nonni.  And, I promise Pops and I already LOVE YOU UP TO THE SKY AND BACK AGAIN AND AS WIDE AS THE OCEAN. You are a special blessing.
Nonni (AKA One B)

Spring Eludes Us and Summer Is Around The Corner

For those of us who are insomniacs, Summer reruns can cause havoc.  There's absolutely nothing on television Monday through Sunday, so I scramble to watch all the recommendations I get throughout the year. It's a perfect season to binge watch, especially if the rain in the Northeast continues at the rate it has been coming. Occasionally, you might want to turn off the t.v. and read, go out to eat, or catch a movie. I will include those recommendations too.

TELEVISION

Ramy-Hulu. Ramy is the son of an Egyptian immigrant , living in New Jersey and navigating his life in a Muslim Community after 911. I loved this series. Well done.

Shtisel-Netflix.  Ultra Orthodox family in Jerusalem and the trials and tribulations of their daily life.
            Subtitles. Quite good.

The Night Manager-Amazon Prime. Based on John Le Carre's novel. Crime, intrique, sex. All good. Especially Tom Hiddleston, who is extremely easy on the eyes. (shout out to Barbara and Evan for suggesting this!)

Animal Kingdom-TNT. Season 4 begins May 28. Story about a crime family led by the matriarch, Ellen Barkin. I am into it, but not for everyone. A bit like the Sopranos, but less charm.

The Act-Hulu. Season one was based on the true story of a mom and her daughter, who has a barrage of medical issues. Patricia Arquette is super creepy as the mom. Joey King is sensational as her daughter. Beware-not an easy series to watch. Not for the squeamish.

Best Room Wins-Bravo. For all of you that love interior design, this is a fun show. Two designers are selected each week to design a room for their clients. Each week the host, Genevieve Gorder,  different famous designers, and Whitney Robinson, Editor of ELLE Décor, get to judge who designed the better room. It's interesting, educational, and provides a fresh, new twist on boring home shows.

Dead to Me-Netflix. Christina Applegate stars as a recent widow and the woman she befriends at a grief support meeting. Intriguing.

Perpetual Grace-Epix. premiers on June 2. Starring Ben Kingsley. This about a mysterious grifter and a shady Pastor and his wife.

BOOKS

When Breath Becomes Air-by Paul Kalanithi. Idealist young neurosurgeon faced with cancer answers what makes life worth living.

Normal People-by Sally Rooney. Book of the Year. Coming of Age Love Story.

There's A Word For That-by Sloane Tanen. Dysfunctional aging celebrity and her opioid addicted husband deal with familial and societal obligations.

Trust Exercise-by Susan Choi. Supposedly, beautifully written novel that follows three stories of a group of theater students that attended a magnet school in the 80's.

What I Told My Daughter by Nina Tassler. A Collection of stories from highly accomplished women.

A Ladder To The Sky by John Boyne. Story about an author's manipulative path to literary stardom.
(shout out to Laurie)

MOVIES

Wine Country-Netflix. Saturday Night Live famed cast  go on a girl's trip. Cute, Light, and good for a  rainy night at home.

Beach Bum-Matthew McConaughey stars as Moondog. A fun loving druggy trying to finish his great American novel. Horrible (unless you are able to see it on demand) and you may think it's funny if you are stoned.

Yesterday-in theaters on June 28. A much awaited film about the Beatles. Interesting Cast.

Amazing Grace-singer Aretha Franklin Performs gospel at a Baptist Church in L.A. She is beyond fabulous.

Us-Jordan Peele's. Another haunting and scary movie that has you grabbing the person next to you. You have to enjoy this genre! And have a bucket of popcorn...

RESTAURANTS

Mandara-40 Clinton Ave. West Caldwell. Southern Italian.

Fauborg-544 Bloomfield Ave. French, Wine Cellar, Private rooms.  Daniel Boulud alums. Coming soon.

Luna Stella-5 Highland Place Maplewood. Supposedly opening soon. Family Italian and liquor license. Owned by the chef of Lorena's.

Osteria Giotta-Midland Ave. Montclair. Former owner reopening in same location. Delicious Italian. Hopefully, opening soon. BYO.

Allegro-58 Kossuth St. Newark. Seafood, Paella, Music, Outdoor seating when weather permits.

Casa Vasca-141 Elm St. Newark. Delicious Shrimp, and other seafood. Try the garlic shrimp.

Café Espresso Italia-Newark. All the cops come here for lunch.  A local favorite. Get there before noon and order their subs. There's a line out the door. Nothing extraordinary, but fresh and prepared by 3 cute, little, old women.

With Pro Choice and  Roe vs. Wade  being challenged;  tariffs about to make the  prices of our food, appliances, etc. go through the roof;  Boeing lying to the public; another threat of  imminent war with Iran; and North Korea firing short range missiles: WE NEED DISTRACTIONS! So go read, watch television and go out to eat and drink!

To quote lyrics of one of my favorite songs by the New Radicals (who??!)

"But when the night is falling
You cannot find the light
You feel your dreams are dying
HOLD TIGHT

The world is GONNA pull through
Don't give up
You've got a reason to live
Can't forget...."

PEACE OUT-ONE B

LIVE WHILE YOU LIVE MY FRIENDS

Currently I am dealing with the inevitable misfortune of ailing elderly parents. When not in Florida visiting with them and tending to their immediate needs, I am in New Jersey fielding calls and texts. Each day, all day, it is a barrage of communication from hospice, doctors, aides, case managers, social workers, and my parents. Major issues need attention and mediating from a distance is difficult and ineffective. My mother (who is quite ill in her own right) is presently the healthier spouse. Her only concern is keeping my father alive - it is actually quite selfish, but understandable after almost 72 years of wedded bliss. She denies him sedating medication even though it often helps quiet some of his ailments. What I repeatedly witness day after day is their glimmer of hope that they will get better. She and he are in total denial most of the time and then occasionally there is a fleeting moment of reality that this may actually be the end.  During my many visits there while they sleep 90% of their lives away, I have had too much time to reflect upon life and death. Much of what I am about to say are quotes from the book The Unwinding of A Miracle by Julie Yip-Williams and from an article in The Atlantic by Ezekiel Emanuel. These two people have given me a clearer idea of what the end of life is like for both the parents and their children who sadly witness their decline.
"We all are obsessed with living a healthy lifestyle all in a valiant effort to cheat death and prolong life." And my parents HAVE cheated death and  lived almost all of their 92 and 95 years enjoying great health, knowing intense love, socializing with many friends, savoring family, travel, and their early retirement in a beautiful warm climate. They have experienced what all of us can only hope for.
But, sadly, the harsh reality is that death awaits us all. Yes, and "death deprives us of experiences and milestones."  My parents are blessed to have achieved  many milestones, and they are no longer having experiences. Observing their current behavior and actions, I have come to understand that it is human nature to put up the good fight; to be eternally hopeful that we will feel better tomorrow, and to never give up. But, for them, at this juncture, it is not realistic.
My parents are no longer " living a vibrant life. They are alive but incapacitated. They are hostages in their own home. Sometimes living too long is also a loss. It renders many of us, if not disabled, then faltering and declining." To me, this is a state that is possibly worse than death.

I believe my parents " have a fear of being small,  of becoming irrelevant and worst of all, being forgotten. That is why they continue to resist death. I also believe that "true inner strength does lie in facing death with peace and serenity. The truth is that death isn't the enemy but simply an inevitable part of life. I know that truth is very difficult for all of us to accept.  But living a life with no quality transforms people. It changes the way people experience us, relate to us, and most of all remember us. I want to look back on my parents with all the happy memories and admiration for their lives well lived. I don't want to resent the constant phone calls. I don't want to feel angry and anxious.  I feel helpless and I must admit, I am having great difficulty navigating this trying and complicated time. We all will go through or have gone through this stage with our parents, It isn't easy to balance my emotions and at the same time keep my parents safe and calm. It is a horrendous time for all of us.

So in the end, I want my parents to realize they have loved and certainly, have been loved. They should  rejoice in the knowledge that they raised successful, kind and happy children. These children have now raised their own amazing, fabulous children. And now, those children are in the midst of their own rich lives and raising their little ones. They should take pleasure and solace in the fact that they had a large part in creating this incredible extended family.

So all my friends out there-LIVE WHILE YOU LIVE because there won't be a u-haul behind your coffin.....

TELEVISION-WHAT TO WATCH:

CBS at 7a.m.-My favorite way to start the morning is to watch CBS This Morning Eye Opener: Your
World in 90 Seconds. It gives me a great fast recap of the news. It's fabulous.

Black Monday-Sunday nights on Showtime. About the stock market crash. Don Cheadle, Andrew Rannells, and Regina Hall make this an absolute joy to watch. Finale is next week, but you can watch it on demand.

Smilf-Also Sunday nights on Showtime. Frankie Shaw and Rosie O'Donnell are superb in this show about a struggling single mother in South Boston. Shaw is brilliant-she writes, directs, and stars in this series. I have to admit that last season was a bit better than this season.

Better Things- On FX  Thursdays@10 p.m.  Pamela Adlon stars as Sam Fox, a single mom raising 3 daughters. She has no filter, is a working actor,  and her crazy mom lives across the street.  Enough said-it's hilarious. Just watch.

Shitt's Creek-On POP Wednesdays@10p.m.- A wealthy couple suddenly finds themselves broke and move to a small town where they own a motel. Eugene Levy, Daniel Levy, and Sarah Levy star along with Catherine O'Hara and Annie Murphy. Every scene is a delight and each cast member shines. Pure fun.

Spin-On Netflix. Full disclosure-I haven't watched yet. Plot is about a French President who is assassinated. Two spin doctors that were friends are now pitted against each other in a snap election. Highly recommended to me.

Billions-Sunday nights on Showtime. Loving this season. Paul Giamatti and Damian Lewis finally co-conspire to conquer their enemies and succeed in their careers. Very interesting season so far.

You're the Worst-FXX Wednesdays@10pm. Two cranky people fall in love and show us marriage, fear, sex, and sometimes heartbreak.  Sometimes Aya Cash who stars as Gretchen can be a bit annoying. Still I keep watching.

BOOKS I JUST FINISHED:

The Tournament- by Matthew Reilly. Historical fiction, a mystery, and a chess match during the 1500's. Not usually a fan of historical fiction, but I really liked this! Fast paced.

The Last Romantics-by Tara Conklin. The first book recommended by Jenna Bush for her new book club. Follows the Skinner family over the span of a century. It looks at family and sibling relationships and how they ebb and flow. Very good.

Speak No Evil-by Uzodinma Iweala. Well written book tells two stories 1)of a Harvard bound gay man dealing with coming out, and 2)his best friend, Meredith, dealing with her post college adjustment. Captivating and sad.

Next Book On Jenna Bush Hager's Book List; The Unwinding of the Miracle by Julie Yip-Williams. I am going to get that tomorrow! Jenna is the new Oprah!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So I just returned from Florida where my family was fortunate enough to celebrate my Dad's 95th Birthday. And I heard a quote that I will end with today:
"Aging is a luxury. If we are lucky we are all going to age!"

And Finally, a big shout out to my hubby who after 5 months is able to see just ONE of everything again. So thrilled for you! Two of me was too much to take...

FEBRUARY FOLLIES: FILMS, FOOD, FAVORITES, LITERATURE & PODCASTS

Winter is in full swing and for me that means more indoor time to read, listen, shop on line, and then venture out to gather sustenance and see movies. The Oscars are fast approaching so let's do the Flicks first.

FILMS

A Star is Born-**** Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper star. Very good remake. Won't win for best film.

Ben is Back-**Julia Roberts and Lucas Hedges. Good, but depressing. Watch it on demand.

Black Klansman-****A Spike Lee film starring Denzel's son, John David Washington. True story. I predict this will win Best Director. Spike has never won, and in this politically charged moment, I think he'll finally get the recognition he well deserves.

Black Panther-can't rate it, because I haven't seen it yet. But this is the major contender for
Best Film.

Bohemian Rhapsody-****Fun to watch from beginning to end. The story of the band Queen and Freddy Mercury. Rami Malek may just nab Best Actor for his role as Mercury.

The Favourite-***About Queen Anne and her friend Lady Sarah. Starring Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz, and Olivia Colman. Colman is a strong contender for Best Actress. Film was good, not great.

Green Book-****Fabulous film but it will be overlooked. Great performances by Mahershala Ali and Viggo Mortensen. Ali should win for best supporting actor. Think Driving Miss Daisy in reverse.

If Beale Street Could Talk-***Based on James Baldwin's story of a woman who seeks to clear the name of her wrongly accused lover and prove his innocence. Acting was superb.

On The Basis of Sex-**Entertaining, but not as good as the television documentary about RBG.

The Mule-****. One of my year's favorites. Clint Eastwood is spectacular. Don't miss this one!

The Vice-****. Although this received only fair reviews, I thought it was quite good. Christian Bale as Cheney, Sam Rockwell as George Bush, and Amy Adams as Lynne Cheney give stellar performances. Adams may nab Best Supporting Actress for this.

The Wife-****. An older woman questions her choice of husband and abandoning her career for him. Glenn Close will take the Best Actress Award for her role.

The Upside-**. Not a great movie, but I still liked it.  Bryan Cranston and Kevin Hart are terrific.

So my predictions are: Black Panther/Best Movie; Black Klansman/Best Director; Rami Malek/Best Actor; Best Supporting Actor/Mahershala Ali; Best Actress/Glen Close; Best Supporting Actress/Regina King; Best Song/Lady Gaga.

February Follies

"I'm Mad as Hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore"

To all my friends who are Republicans, I apologize for the rant that I am about to shout.  I have tried not to venture into political opinions when writing my blog. But truthfully, I can't hold back anymore. I respect whatever anyone believes politically. But please don't tell me that you endorse Donald Trump. He lies to the country each and every day. He is totally unqualified to run this country. He acts like a two year old throwing tantrums and he twitters to change the dialogue when he doesn't get his way. It doesn't matter to me if you are far left or far right. What matters to me (and it should to all of you) is having an honest, intelligent, empathetic, informed individual looking out for our country. This man doesn't have a clue. At least surround yourself with intelligent, experienced people who would advise you to do the right thing. But, no one stays with him for long, because they can't tolerate his behavior. So as Peter Finch in Network says, "GET MAD.  Get up out of your chairs. Go to the window. Open it. Stick your head out and yell, I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take this anymore."
"We know things are bad. They are worse than bad."

Have you seen Donald Trump Jr.'s instagram statement today? He asks, "You know why you can enjoy a day at the zoo? Because walls work. Is he actually saying a border wall is like zoo fence which protects you from animals (immigrants)? OMG-I can't even believe those words could be uttered out of any human being's mouth. Where is the compassion and empathy this country is known for? I wonder if Mueller will show him how well walls work....

Let's discuss Donald Trump Sr. ( I can't bear to address him as the President) who compared immigrants to a bowl of skittles in which some of the candies are poisoned. How can anyone support this man? He sets a horrendous example to our youth and to the world. Promoting hate and intolerance is not what this country was built on.
"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamb beside the golden door."

Do you even realize how severely this government shut down affects our country? Do you fly on planes for vacation or business? Think twice and good luck-The FAA who inspects planes and who certifies pilot training are furloughed. No one is inspecting your plane before take off. Or if someone is, they are an overworked skeleton crew is doing all of it with out pay. There is virtually no safety oversight on your flight today. Air traffic controllers are working with no pay. It is unconscionable. The irony is Trump is so concerned about allowing terrorists into our country at the borders. Yet, for the past 20 days they can basically just fly in. TSA agents aren't being paid, but have to show up for work. Imagine the mental state and morale of all these airport employees forced to work, and not getting paychecks.

What else is being affected? I'll tell you. The Department of Homeland Security, the Justice Department, Housing and Urban Development, Commerce, The Treasury, Transportation, and Food Stamps.
The EPA is not operating at full strength. There are sensors to detect air pollution and chemicals in the air, and these reports (about the pollution) are delayed. Therefore, we are unaware of the air quality as it's happening in real time.

The FDA says most food inspections are halted during the shutdown. The agency typically conducts roughly 160 inspections per week and now there are none. These checks search for bug infestations, unclean conditions and contamination.  Beware of seafood and cheese as well as veggies. VERY SCARY.

As of today, there are 800,000 Federal employees furloughed without pay. They don't know how they will pay their mortgage, rent, electric bills, phone bills or buy food.
There is a need to reopen the government whether Trump gets a wall or not. He can sign a bill to do that. Republicans and Democrats MUST end this insanity. People want to work, and want to get paid.
And, let me remind you that the terrorists and the gun violence that has occurred in this country in the past years is not performed by immigrants seeking refuge from horrific conditions in their native countries and trying to come to the U.S. through our borders.  Rather, the violence has been by people who came through airports, or who have lived in the U.S. for years and often they are U.S. Citizens with guns. Too bad the NRA doesn't shut down-JUST SAYING.

Peace out-Oneb
