December Movies and notable TV

My husband and I love the movies. We go as much as possible. When we are not going to the movies, we are looking to see what we can rent on demand at our home. In the past month or so, we have watched  all of the following.  I will list them in the order of  our favorites first.

SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK- Bradley Cooper (world's sexiest man- and yes, he is easy on the eyes!) and Jennifer Lawrence (star of Hunger Games) star in this, along with DeNiro. A  bipolar,
Philadelphia Eagles Fan (is that redundant?) finds a new life, falls in love, and becomes a "regular guy" after attempting to kill the man he sees in his shower making love to his wife....loved it!

THIS IS 40-Sequel to Knocked Up. Leslie Mann, (real life wife of Judd Apatow) and his daughters star in this family comedy. Paul Rudd plays Pete, Mann's husband. Watch for Melissa McCarthy who has two great scenes, and Albert Brooks as Paul Rudd's Father. This is a movie that shows the realities of a marriage and family: we fight about the kids, money, life, our parents. Truthfully, this hit a little too close to home for me so it was not always funny....I cringed at a few of the topics. By the way, I do shop at Ann Taylor Loft! (see the movie). The topic of  how men drive
women crazy (gift selections, excessive bathroom time, not standing up to ridiculous parents who are completely out of line, etc.) shows all of us that we are not the only dysfunctional family on the block. Make sure to stay for the end and watch the credits-very funny.

LINCOLN-I predict Daniel Day-Lewis will get the academy award for this performance. Spielberg directs the movie which illustrates the 16th president's final months in office. We see a nation divided and a gridlocked house divided over how to end the war between the states and how to end slavery. This has a star studded cast and a terrific script. Watch how art imitates life-the movie is more timely than you would imagine with  parallel issues of government not coming to mutually acceptable agreements. Only, in this movie, the Republicans were the "good guys"!   A MUST SEE

DJANGO UNCHAINED-typical Tarentino. The movie starts two years before the Civil War ends. Jamie Fox is Django, a slave turned bounty hunter. He partners with Dr. King Shultz, a german born Bounty hunter portryayed brilliantly by Christoph Waltz (another academy award worthy nod).  Only Django can lead Shultz to the Brittle Brothers and so the story goes. If you like Tarentino, you will enjoy this. However, it is very long (2hrs. 46min), poorly edited, and exceedingly bloody, so be prepared. Not one of his better films.

THE GUILT TRIP-Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen star. A terrible script, one long "jewish, nagging, mother joke". Rogen steps back and lets Streisand star. Mother and Son go on a road trip to sell son's latest invention. Not funny, nothing redeeming about this movie. A total waste of your time. Don't Go.

MOVIES ON DEMAND

TED- Very Raunchy and Very Funny. Stars Mark Wahlberg and Mila Cunis. worth a look.
CENTRAL PARK FIVE-documentary about 5 black/latino teens arrested and charged for attacking and raping a white female in Central Park. They spent years in prison for a crime they didn't commit but were brutally forced to confess to by the corrupt cops. Hard to watch, infuriating that this could happen. Not an easy movie to stay with.
STRUCK BY LIGHTENING- Rebel Wilson(Pitch Perfect) and Chris Colfer(Glee) star.  Plot is about a teen trying to survive the dilemmas of highschool and his crazy parents. Very mediocre, not funny.
TROUBLE WITH THE CURVE- Amy Adams and Clint Eastwood star in this movie about a baseball scout and his daughter who are forced to spend some time together, and renew a relationship. Terrible-not worth watching.
SASSY PANTS-home schooled teen runs away from mom to live with dad. I fell asleep-my husband said it was horrible.

TELEVISION

KENNEDY CENTER HONORS-just a quick note about last night's program honoring David Letterman, Dustin Hoffman, Natilia Makarova, Buddy Guy, and Led Zeppelin.
Much of the show was a snooze, but notable moments to watch on the internet:
The entire tribute to Led Zeppelin was AWESOME!  Kid Rock was spectacular, Lenny Kravitz singing Whole Lotta Love brought the house down. And finally, Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart sang an amazing rendition of Stairway to Heaven.
Most enjoyable was watching Obama with his arm around Michelle rocking to the music. And watch for Yo-Yo Ma  grooving to the beat- completely hysterical.

Jimmy Kimmel giving his tribute to Letterman: "You are the hero of all of us, with the possible exception of the people who came to see the ballerina."
Ray Romano telling us what he learned from Letterman: "Don't Quit! Do you quit when you're down one nothing in the Debates (as he looks up at Obama!)? No-you keep going."

Tracy Chatman and Reba's tribute to blues great, Buddy Guy-really, really great.

A New Laptop or A New Hip?

Lately, I have noticed my computer shuts down all by itself. I will walk out of the room and when I come back in, it has turned off! Then, to make matters worse, it often will not turn back on.  My family has explained that a computer is not meant to last for more than a few years. I think this one is about 6 years old.  I stay awake at night and watch HSN and QVC and SHOPNBC. Everyone has a deal. The computers are about $500 and come with several hundred dollars of software. My head starts to spin. I feel these networks all have great deals! I'll order a new one tomorrow, I say. Then tomorrow comes. And I can't betray my old friend. I am attached to my obsolete, failing computer. I just can't pull the trigger for some silly reason. And miraculously, she turns on.....
Which brings me to my 58-year-old left hip. Recently, I noticed it shuts down all by itself. I try to walk out of the room or jog up the steps and it fails me. This can't possibly be happening, can it? The three doctors I have consulted tell me they can't believe I can even walk. "Bone on Bone" they all say. A hip of an 80-year-old they all say. Bah Humbug! I love this hip. I have walked through Yellowstone, Yosemite, Maine, Europe, Canada....it has gotten me far and done a pretty impressive job. I stay awake at night and think about which month to do the surgery, which doctor to use, which type of surgery (anterior vs. posterior), and which hospital I want to do it in. I play a schedule in my head....I actually commit. That's it-now or never, one b. I can't go on this way. I am definitely doing it- YES, I am.
And then tomorrow comes. And I can't betray my old friend. I am attached to this obsolete, arthritic, failing hip. And I just can't pull the trigger for some insane reason. However, as I try to pull on my pants, I begin to think my new hip will be happening faster than my new computer.

I Always Advise An Advocate

In the past year or so, it seems that I am surrounded by friends and relatives who have someone in their lives that has become ill and needed hospitalization. As we age, it is inevitable that we will be taking more of an active role in caring for our aging parents. While no one likes to think about the prospect of being the caretaker,  a child more often than not, takes on this responsibility. Even if there is a spouse still alive to take on this task , I find that too much information can become confusing and difficult to retain for the healthy spouse. It creates too much anxiety when they are worried about their loved one.
I strongly recommend that someone accompanies the patient to the doctor's office and goes into the room with them. You should have questions ready and if necessary, write down all responses,  write down the protocol the doctor expects the patient to follow, the medications, and any other relevant information he discusses. Do not be intimidated by a curt or demeaning physician. Stand your ground.  Do not be rushed.
If the patient has to be hospitalized, one should be there as much as possible. Specifically, you want to be there when medication is dispensed AND when the doctors typically make their rounds. Too many times the wrong medicine or the wrong dosage is given, or two medicines conflict with one another. Often one doctor isn't aware what another doctor has ordered. All kinds of issues can go wrong-and many mistakes happen all the time. I have had experiences while my children and my mom have been hospitalized, and I have caught  incidents with medication where a disaster was just about to happen. Personally, I suggest you keep a ledger of all nurses, their times on duty, and the meds dispensed and the times they are given. I also keep notes on each morning, afternoon, and evening visit by the doctors, the doctors' names and what they report.
If you think a nurse is not tending to the relative properly, you must SPEAK UP. If you notice a symptom that has appeared or a reaction, SPEAK UP. Do not be afraid to ask a question, or ask for help, or call the doctor. Follow your instincts. In your gut, you can tell when someone is failing, hurting, or in need of attention. In the final analysis, having an advocate will help facilitate a speedier
recovery,  a more efficient rehabilitation or resolution, and a happier patient.
It is always nice to know that someone is watching out for you-Especially at a time when you are not capable of doing this for yourself. You will be saving someone's life and that someone is a person you love very much.

     movies

Skyfall-although it was entertaining, it was too long. It lacked "typical Bond sexual innuendo.

   politics

The Republican Party-they are just horrible. What is going on with Susan Rice? They are sticking
needles at Obama. Are they trying to force a Kerry Nomination? They need to
take a long walk off a short plank-all of them......are you serious, McCain?

Reflections On being a Grandma-5 1/2 months later

So I haven't checked in for awhile. I have been busy-"good" busy Where do I begin to describe what it is like to have a new role, a new name, a new responsibility? I am Nonni- which before the birth of the baby, was a much debated and controversial choice for my title in my family. I couldn't bare the thought of being Grandma Debbie-I know everyone is gasping right about now! But, Really? You can understand that one of us is sufficient for this universe. (And thank goodness she doesn't have a computer). So, I forged into  new territory- Since I love to cook, I love to eat,  and I love all things Italian-why not Nonni? It's as just as lovely as Gigi, Nanna, Bobbi, Grandma, Soffie, Savfta, etc. etc. You get the drift! OK-so FOCUS-back to topic: Being Nonni to my new grandson, Max!
The feeling is indescribable. I am over the moon with joy! The things and people that used to bother me, annoy me, make me anxious miraculously disappear upon seeing his face. Whether he is sad (which is extremely rare), happy, asleep, screeching, or laughing; each emotion that he elicits is sheer heaven.
Recently, we had the fortune of this little bundle sleeping over for a few days. I, literally, would lay awake from 5 a.m. in anticipation of hearing his first coos around 7:15 a.m. I would whisper to Pops (who is even more in love with this baby than I am, if that is actually possible) that this is what a child must feel like on Christmas morning awaiting that moment when they can open their gifts. Max is a gift-one that keeps on giving. Being a grandparent is very different from being a parent- and for me, it is soooooo much more fun. Not better, but more fun. Raising children and doing it well, is a serious business filled with joy, drama, stress, conflict, and hopefully when you are done, a lot of success. You need to work at it every second, and then pray a whole lot that you have created sensitive, kind, mature, creative, intelligent, thoughtful, and successful individuals that will add something to this world. And then you have to be lucky......I was/We were!
Now, as a first time grandparent, it is completely a different ballgame. Sure you worry, but realistically, I know that my grandson has two brilliant parents that will worry better, and if they don't always know the answers, they will figure out how to find them. I have total confidence that they are up to the task.
After all, look at what this amazing couple created-the most wonderful, baby in the world. Ok, maybe I am prejudiced and all grandparents think that about their grandchildren! Truly this child is beyond special and joyous and fantabulous and gorgeous. So, for now I will take pleasure in watching his parents do the hard work.
And Pops and Nonni will relax, enjoy our time with him, and look forward to watching this little boy evolve into a person who will become as spectacular as his parents.

MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD

Did you know that the average voter in the U.S. is White and Female? Did you know that 72% of voters are between the ages of 65-74?  And did you realize that about half of voting age Americans do not vote in Presidential Elections? This is something that makes my blood boil. I simply cannot tolerate or understand the decision for an individual not to vote in an election. No one has the right to complain about anything in our country, EVER, if they do not cast a vote.
I am lucky and grateful to be an American who celebrates the freedom of speech and the freedom of religion.  We are priviledged to live in a democratic society where we get to determine who rules our states and government.  Many people have died to protect these rights and to attain our ability to vote. Not only is it our right, but it is also our duty, and moral obligation to vote. It is not something that should be taken for granted.
As a woman, issues that are particularly important to examine: equal pay, contraception, the ability to be pro choice or pro life,  health care coverage for mammograms/pap/births , better education and schools for our children and their children, the preservation of social services.
As an older woman, I am also extremely concerned about where medicare and social security is headed in this country.
As Michelle Obama states: " No matter where you stand on these issues or who you plan to vote for, a healthy democracy DEPENDS on us making our voices heard."
So set aside all the inevitable moaning about politicians and partisanship, and do what is right.
Take 15 minutes out of your day on November 6th and go to the polls. Do what many people all around the world are dying for, and dying to do: GO VOTE!
   YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

Summer Ends and Fall begins

Feel that crisp, cool, delicious hint of fall in the air? Isn't it glorious? I have determined that I have the opposite of SAD (seasonal affective disorder). I literally hate the sun and the heat of summer. I hate the thought of putting on a bathing suit. I hate to swim. I hate summer fashion. It all depresses me. It wears me down. I feel unenergetic and pressured to be outside. If given the choice, I would spend every summer day in the comfort of air conditioning and reading a good book until this season was over. Although fall seems to be shorter and shorter each year, I relish the days of October. What does it mean to me? Leaves turning beautiful colors, picking apples in the countryside, hiking in the reservation,  celebrating one daughter's birthday and also my birthday,  celebrating my other daughter's wedding anniversary, spendingThanksgiving with the family, and happy in the knowledge that as winter approaches, I have the priviledge of spending Sat. and Sun. mornings with my husband since it becomes a little chilly for golf!
My friends often suggest I buy a vacation home in Colorado, rather than Florida. They insist I would be ecstatic there. I haven't been to Colorado since I was a teen so I guess I should check it out!Yet, neither will ever actually happen. N.J. is my home and despite Chris Christie, I love it here!  Often people say, of course, fall is great, but winter is sooo horrid. NOPE! I love winter too. I love the cold, wearing cashmere sweaters and suede boots, going to the movies on a weekend afternoon, lighting a fire and reading a book, laying in bed on sunday afternoons, reading the New York Times, and then going out for Chinese food. This all makes me happy.Snow makes me happy!  No pressure to be outside all day battling the crowds at the beach or slaving over a hot grill in 100 degree weather. My oven and stove suffice for creating my minestrone and stuffed peppers. And baking every week is so much fun too!
And finally, just as the snow and ice begin to become a nuisance, a hint of spring appears. A warmer day, crocuses popping up, a walk in the park where children and dogs are playing. It is another season I like almost as much as Fall and Winter. Why? Because in the back of my mind I know what is coming: the dreaded dog days of summer!

On becoming a Grandparent

A week ago, my oldest daughter gave birth to a son. For me, becoming a parent and raising two daughters was the most rewarding, the hardest, and the happiest of times. If I do say so myself, my husband and I did a pretty amazing job. Both my daughters are intelligent, beautiful, accomplished, confident, independent and kind women. If I were to repeat the advice that I gave to my daughters along the way, these would be some of the ideas I tried to convey. First and Foremost, be kind to everyone: girls, especially, must be nice to other girls. Second, pick something you love to do and something you can also do from your home when children do come into the picture ( I so wish my parents had stressed this).  Third, whatever your age, a woman should never define herself by having a man or being in a relationship. Fourth, when and if you do fall in love, make sure the person respects you, make sure they love you beyond infinity and puts you first at ALL times. Finally, know that parents do the best they can. They never intentionally screw up, but it happens.
So now that my job of raising my daughters is done, I have been assigned a new position. I am Nonni and I have the most exquisite grandson.  This job is a little easier and a lot more fun! My grandson is perfect in everyway-REALLY! So, I will now reveal what I have learned so far.  Most important and never to be forgotten: my grandson's parents are very, very smart. They will figure out what to do and how to do it without my advice. If they want advice or assistance, I am more than happy to oblige. But, I am confident in my daughter and son in laws abilities and this is their child, not mine. Next, Love your grandchild unconditionally. You don't have to be quite as strict this time around. Let them know they can come to you for any reason and at any time. Get on the floor and play with your grandchild. Be silly. Sing to them. Read to them. Bake with them. Dance with them. And then, teach them to respect and be kind to everyone no matter their race, religion, political preference, or sex.  And one day soon, my grandson, you will learn to treat women as your equal and at the same time, be a gentleman. Open doors, Stand up when a woman approaches a table; Listen intently when a woman (or anyone for that matter) talks-hear what they are saying; Pull out her chair when she sits down; Never curse, bite your nails, fart, or pick your nose! Manners are a lost art these days and need to be taught.
All that being said, I am in magnificent bliss. I am flying high. I am elated beyond any description. I watch my baby caring for her baby and tears of joy rain down upon my face. She and her husband have produced an amazing young man-a miraculous blessing. I cherish these past days and look so foward to many minutes, hours, days and years of watching this beautiful boy grow up and enjoy this magical world. How blessed I am ........How lucky I am.......And how lucky he is to be surrounded by so many incredible people who love him.

Ode to My Husband

Tomorrow my husband and I will celebrate our 35th Wedding Anniversary. If you had consulted with my mother-in-law, she would have told you it would never last. In fact, she hoped it wouldn't last. But in spite of that, we have enjoyed being together for 38 years. Last night we had the priviledge of enjoying this celebration with our daughters and our sons in laws. The children asked if we could impart any sage advice on how to make a marriage work. So, after a few drinks, I am not exactly sure if I mentioned all of the following, so at the risk of repeating myself, here goes.
  1. Always hear your spouse out-REALLY LISTEN. Don't be dismissive of their feelings. If someone is feeling sad, happy, angry, scared and they need to tell you or blame you, you need to hear what they are saying and try and find a solution. Empathize-Do not mock or be sarcastic.
  2. Be playful, active, always willing to try something new with each other. This could be on a trip, on a night out, with friends, or in your home. It doesn't matter. Even if you don't have the same interests, respect what each of you enjoy and allow each other to experience those pleasures. Explore, have adventures, and don't get into a rut.  Everyday can't be a holiday, but you can  keep it fun alot of the time.
  3. The 3 things you will continually argue about: MONEY, YOUR CHILDREN, YOUR     RELATIVES. This will never end-EVER.  So figure out that sometimes the two of you have to agree to disagree.  Acknowledge to each other that your children, in laws, parents, or siblings can be annoying, or selfish, or demanding, or wrong. This doesn't mean that they aren't good, loving, wonderful people. Everyone will deal with this. You both must be willing to recognize that people aren't at their best at all times. Admit it. Don't Defend it.
  4. Don't evade the issues. Communicate. Don't run. Work it out.
  5. Be thoughtful. Buy each other a gift even when it's not an occasion. Leave a nice note. Cook for each other.
  6. Do the dishes for each other. Fold the Laundry and put it away. Vacuum or clean out your       spouse's car, closet, etc.  Put your spouse first - always....
  7. Hold hands. Kiss. Touch. You can never do this enough.
  8. Finally, you have to like each other. Respect each other. Be supportive, laugh, encourage         your partner to do better, to excel. Be proud of your spouse.
To my husband-I adore you. You are the love of my life, the light of my life, the person who keeps me standing, and who makes me ready to face each day with a smile.  I know you have my back forever and always. And I have yours. So here's to another 35 years of blissful marriage filled with lots of love,  fun adventures,  many laughs and infinite health! xo, Deb

Be Present in The Moment

Yesterday, I watched  Brian Williams conduct a short interview with President Clinton. The President told Brian that his family had gotten their first television when he was ten years old. His generation was "a storytelling generation". By that he meant that his family talked to each other and learned from people retelling stories to one another. For the first ten years of his life, there was no television. He expressed concern that today's generation who texts on an average of 80 times a day are missing out on what is really important. I completely concur with President Clinton.
Recently, I was involved in an altercation at a restaurant. I witnessed a mom, dad, and 3 teenage children at a dinner table. All were on their IPhones while chowing down. Everyone was looking down. No one was interacting. I thought this was sad and depressing. I long for the days when my (now 28 and 31 year old) daughters sat at the dinner table with me and their dad telling us all about the day. We discussed politics, work, school, and family. It was my most favorite time of the day! So, Getting back to the family at the restaurant, I realized I had absolutely no right to interfere, but I just couldn't help myself. I told the dad what a beautiful family he had. I told him how lucky he was to have them and how lucky they were to have two wonderful parents. AND, I told him what a shame it was, that noone was enjoying the moment.  Although he agreed,  his wife was extremely angry that I interfered. And she was correct-I had no right to say anything. But, I couldn't stop thinking about the sadness of the scene.
The next day my husband and I witnessed a grandfather and his grandson out for a sunday night dinner. The grandfather was playing on his IPhone while the grandson stared into space. Again, I thought there was so much they could be learning from one another, and so much joy they could be getting from this moment. Instead,  silence ensued.
A third example I recently watched was a young teen coming into a salon for a pedicure. Shortly after she began to soak her feet, her mom came in and sat in the adjacent seat to also get a
pedicure. Immediately, they both took out their phones and began texting at breakneck speed. I never saw fingers move so fast. I was again profoundly sad viewing them. Here was a perfect moment where a mom and daughter could have interacted and discussed their day. Neither had any interest in doing that. How could this little phone have more importance than talking to your mom or your child or your grandchild?
I am about to become a grandma for the first time. I am about to celebrate my 35th Anniversary. I have a great husband and marriage. I have two amazing healthy parents.  I am proud of my two fabulous daughters and son in laws. I love my siblings, nieces, and nephews. I WANT to be in the MOMENT. I want to experience all these fabulous people and all they  have to offer. I ALWAYS look forward to spending time with them and learning from them. I can't imagine being more blessed and I am so thankful everyday.
True-many of my friends make fun of my technological incompetence! I actually cherish it! My phone is just my phone. A camera is just a camera. A book is just a book. Yes, I do text on occasion but  because it is the only way I can get my daughters to respond quickly! Truthfully, technology often gets it wrong. Think about your phone. When you spell socks, it spells sex. Or you say Disney and it hears divorce. Or how many times does your GPS tell you to go the wrong way? And Siri isn't all that smart or nice! I am tired of automated answering machines when you are trying to get to your dr. or questioning a bill. Enough already.  I don't want to hold for 30 minutes just to be told to leave a name and number for someone to return my call. Can't we just go back to people talking to one another face to face? To really listening to what someone is saying?  If I see one more person walking down the street texting and not watching where they are walking, OR speaking into the air on their bluetooth and not making eye contact with another person on the street,  on the bus, in the store, or on the train, I feel I will scream.
Please take the time to LIVE IN THE MOMENT. Believe me, there's nothing better out there than what you have in front of you this very second. Stop and Smell the roses......it is soooo worth it.

Howard Hughes without the money

I often refer to myself as Howard Hughes without the money. For that matter, I could also refer to myself as Howard Stern or as Howie Mandel without the money! Why? What do I have in common with them? All of these people are germaphobes. Actually, the technical term is mysophobe. I too, am a germaphobe/mysophobe. But, unlike Mr. Hughes, I don't lock myself in a room afraid to leave. Unlike Mr. Mandel, I will shake hands (not happily). Not everything wigs me out, but I will fill you in on what disturbs me most.
The Gym-I go to the gym everyday of the week. I wash down the equipment before I start
and always when I am through. Not everyone does this, and for me, this is an issue. When I
return home from the gym, the first thing I do is wash my hands.

Supermarket-wipe down the carriages. They are carriers of ecoli, and a variety of gruesome
germs. As soon as you leave the carriage and get into your car, use the antibacterial gel!

Hotels-I specifically get grossed out by the decorative quilt which I will remove immediately
from the bed. More importantly, I wipe down the remote control. I am told this item has more
germs than you can possibly imagine!

Menus-These, too, are very disconcerting. I can't do anything about the cleanliness of them
but I tend to use antibacterial gel after ordering and returning them to the host.

Sharing Food-yes, I totally admit I am very challenged in this area. Of course, I will share
with family members. If I am out with non family, I totally freak if someone goes to put their
fork twice in my entree or my dessert. Once is all you are allowed.  Double dipping is not
permitted even with a fork or a spoon!

Airplanes-seatbelts should be wiped down before using. So should armrests and buttons for t.v.
I can't even contemplate what goes on with the headrests-ugh!

Restrooms-This is the most offensive of my list. First, there must be toilet seat covers.
Second, you shouldn't use the first few sections of the hanging toilet paper. Third, how to
flush? foot, or tissue, or hand? Fourth, how to open the door latch once you flush with hand?
Fifth,Wash hands for a long time with soap and hot water. Then, I must already have a paper
towel pulled out and under my arm so that I may turn off the spicket with the towel. Finally,
getting out the door-I use the paper towel to open the door. Hopefully there is a wastebasket
at the door to dispose of the paper towel. If not, I carry it to the garbage somewhere else. The
biggest dilemma is when there are no towels and only hand dryers. Actually, these are the least
sanitary option. They should be outlawed. No restaurant, movie theatre, airport, or public
restroom should allow them. If they exist, you will need to open the door handle using your
shirt, not with your sanitized hands!

People-yes people! If you need to sneeze or cough, please do so in the crux of your elbow. Do
Not cover your mouth with your hands. And when blowing your nose with a tissue, do not
discard in a wastebasket. Flush it down the toilet if possible!

So there you have it. No, I wasn't ill as a child. And,I didn't fall on my head. These idiosyncracies developed with having children and worrying about them getting sick. To this day, I still worry about them. So here is my final warning: When wearing flip flops or sandals while walking in the city, or taking the subway, etc., please wash off your feet with lots of soap/water when you arrive home. And most definitely, do not put your germy feet into your bed without cleaning them first!

"Cameltoe" is the New Black

For those of you not familiar with the term "cameltoe", I will try to delicately define it.  The term refers to a "frontal wedgie" on a female.  The term was coined because when wearing a garment that is too tight, the female genitalia vaguely appears to look like the toes of a camel.
Last night was the final episode of American Idol. As is the case for the past finales, they bring in real recording stars to sing with the semifinalists and the 8 contestants that didn't make it to the semifinals. One of the singers was Fantasia, a winner from a past season of American Idol. If you didn't happen to watch, I will confirm that she clearly needs a new stylist. Fantasia is not a petite woman and yet, she chose to wear a skin tight, black sequined cat suit which was far too tight. If that wasn't bad enough, there were enormous slits down her thigh revealing a not well toned limb. I can't imagine what she was thinking.
Later in the evening, Chaka Khan appeared on stage. She, too, donned a brown sequinned cat suit. Personally, I thought she looked ridiculous. The outfit was skintight and not flattering. After all, she does not have Michelle Pfeiffer's body. Maybe these women are just very self confident and feel it's ok to rock an outfit even if they don't have the appropriate physique. Then, I guess Bravo to them for being so secure in their own skin. I just wish we didn't have to see so much of it.
And, of course, the woman who should come out naked-J Lo- wore a pair of oversized drop crotched harem pants that looked too overwhelming on that incredibly hot body. So ironic that the woman who had the incredible, drop dead body left us all wanting more. And the women who should be more conservative, made us wish we hadn't seen sooooo much!

Confessions of a 57 year old post menopausal woman

It started out as a routine Monday morning for me. Sleep from 2 a.m. until 5 a.m. Get up, make coffee, shower, dress for gym (Yes! I often shower before I go to the gym. Remember this is a 57 year old working out for an hour-I don't sweat a whole lot.)
With the intention of running several errands after the gym and doing a grocery order, I grabbed my purse. Pulling out of the driveway, I checked my wallet to see if I had placed  $200 ( which I believe I had left on my vanity)  into my wallet. But no, I had not. So, I got out of the car (which hadn't even gotten out of my driveway) and went back inside to locate the cash. I believed I had left it on my bedroom vanity. First, I went upstairs and checked there and proceeded to examine every bedroom, closet, drawer and surface upstairs. No sighting of the money. I then went downstairs and checked each room and thoroughly picked through the garbage thinking that somehow I had thrown the $200 in the garbage. Frustrated, and totally feeling I had lost my mind, I left for the gym and errands without cash and only my debit card. Was there something wrong with me? Is this early onset Alzheimer's? Should I seek a consultation with a neurologist? Often I forget where my car is parked, or whom I was dialing, or why I walked into a particular room. But this seemed even scarier.
When I returned home several hours later, I decided to search the house again for the money. When I approached my bedroom vanity, lo and behold, the cash was sitting right there! How could I have possibly missed it the first time?  I grabbed the two hundred bucks and proceeded to go right to my wallet to place it inside.  Later, as I was leaving the house, I grabbed my pocketbook and decided to recheck my wallet to make sure the cash was in it. WHAT??????????? No money in the wallet. How could that possibly be? Again, I searched the entire house and my pockets. Nothing. Then the garbage. And there in the opague green hefty bag sat my money along with a bunch of disposed paperwork! I know-this is embarrasing to retell. Trust me it was embarrasing to live through the first time.
I have asked my husband if he thinks this is something that requires medical attention. He assures me that I am fine and was just distracted. I am not totally convinced of this. However, I have noticed lately that others exhibit a similar "lapse of memory". For example, my husband came downstairs the other morning and hung his suit jacket on the doorknob. When it was time to leave, he couldn't locate his jacket. It was only 5 minutes after he placed it there! This gave me enormous pleasure. Or today, when my sister in law went to pay the check for lunch, and left the check and her credit card on the table as she walked up to the cash register to pay.  This too made me exceptionally happy! And she is almost 8 years younger than me!! For now, I am going to give myself a pass and observe how often this occurs in the next few weeks.  The problem with that idea is: how will I remember?

May's Touts and Doubts

BOOK TOUTS

Lots of Candles, Plenty of Cake  by Anna Quindlen - This was a lovely read that will appeal to all women. She discusses marriage, aging, our bodies, parenting, friends and many other relevant topics.
On age, Ms. Quindlen says, "There are other markers of age, of course: lunch conversation about ailments, prescription meds, and surgery, the watching of the Weather Chanel and the reading of obituaries."

The Newlyweds by Nell Freudenberger-a novel about love and marriage. Beautifully written, great character development, captivating story.

BOOK DOUBTS

Fifty Shades of Grey by E L James-I could rant forever against reading this book. Contrary to many of my friends' opinions, this was not "hot" nor  was it "erotic". I thought it was demeaning to women, poorly written, and not worth a minute of your time. However, if fisting, spanking, shackles, whipping, etc. turn you on, then by all means, have a look.

Confessions of a Bigamist-by Kate Lehrer-a novel about a woman who leads two lives, has two marriages, and is unhappy most of the time. Not well written and not worth reading. Ms. Lehrer is the wife of the journalist Jim Lehrer.

MOVIE TOUTS

Dark Shadows-Typical Tim Burton. Excellent, funny, well done. Mr. Depp is amazing in this movie.

Movie Doubts

The Three Stooges-silly and not worth going. I must admit though, if you were a fan of the original Three Stooges, then you may like this. It was extremely authentic.

TELEVISION TOUTS

Girls-on HBO Sunday Nights. written well. subject matter may not be appropriate for teenage girls. I love it!

The Conversation-on Lifetime. Interviews on different topics with different women each week. Worth a nod, but still reserving judgement.

Magic City-on Starz. Watched the first two episodes last night. I dig it!  The opening with the Eden Roc pool in the bar is exactly the way it was when I went there as a child. Very cool.

TELEVISION DOUBTS

Seven Days of Sex-also on Lifetime. Couples who must have sex 7 days in a row to improve their relationships. Yawn..

HEALTH/DIET TOUTS

The Hunter Farmer Diet by Dr. Mark Liponis. This diet is exactly right. This is the Canyon Ranch Dr. who believes you are either a Hunter or a Farmer. I totallly believe in this theory. Take the quiz to see which category you fall into.

http://hunterfarmerdiet.com/take-the-hunter-farmer-diet-quiz

The Skinny Rules by Bob Harper. This diet believes in several basic ideas. They are the following.
Drink one glass of water when you wake up.
Drink one glass of water before each meal.
Eat protein
Eat berries
Eat Apples
One day a week, do not eat any animal protein
One day a week, have a splurge meal
Stop eating 3 hours before bedtime.

All of this makes perfect sense and will actually keep you thin. No bread, sugar, white flour. Plenty of protein, fruit, veggies, and water! Totally works. Check it out.

SHOW TOUT

Clybourne Park-Pulitzer prize winning play. Real Estate and Race are the subjects. Beautifully Done. Funny. Perfect.

No's, Nose, Knows

Haven't written in awhile, so this is a conglomeration of "stuff" I have been wanting to comment about.

NO'S
Meta@worldpeace is an absolute horror. For those of you who have no idea whom I am referring to, Ron Artest (aka meta@worldpeace) is a Los Angeles Laker Forward. He has a reputation for being a thug which stems from a 2004 attack on a fan during a Pacers/Pistons game. The other night during a Lakers/Thunders game Artest intentionally(in my opinion and many others) elbowed James Harden and gave him a minor concussion. Harden is still recovering and ineligible to play at this time.
In the meantime, Artest claims the elbow was accidental and has delivered an apology. Noone is buying that crock and he has been punished with a seven game suspenison and will miss the season finale along with six postgames. Is this punishment enough? NO-this guy should be fired, fined, and sent packin'....

NOSE
I read and article the other day questioning the safety of a neti pot. Many people during allergy season or with sinus issues use this little device. It is a small vessel that looks like a tea pot and is used to flush out clogged nasal passages. Many people swear that this is an amazing cure. But, take note-Two people died from infections of Naegleria fowleri. This is a rare "brain-eating amoeba" that had infected the tap water used in the netipot!
In order to prevent this bacteria, you can use distilled, sterilized or boiled water. And remember gto rinse the device after each use with distilled, sterilized, or boiled water. FYI-this deadly bacteria is usually found in warm freshwater.

KNOWS
President Obama has a battle on his hands. I think he has been an amazing president. He revived the auto industry, the government has been paid back all of the bailout money plus interest  by the financial institutions, he has found and killed deadly terrorists including the "big guy" Osama Bin Laden, he reduced employee and self employed social security payroll tax, and the economy and jobs are slowly coming back.
The people who are going to reelect him are women, students, middle class, and immigrants. The problem is that many of these groups don't register to vote. So I am specifically appealing to all women out there. Regardless of your political beliefs-PLEASE make sure you are registered to vote and then, actually go to the polls and VOTE! It is your civic duty.

represents is antithetical to our entire history as a land of opportunity
and upward mobility for everyone who's willing to work for it."

Reborn Dolls

Yesterday morning there was a very disturbing story on the news. There was a segment about "Reborn Dolls". These dolls look absolutely like a real infant-it is actually eerie how authentic they are. Apparently, many women collect these dolls. I didn't say little girls collect these dolls-I reiterate WOMEN collect them all across the country and in many other countries. Ok, you say, they collect them as a so called "hobby"- what is so wrong with that? People collect all types of things, right? WELL, these crazy collectors put their dolls in strollers, they take them shopping, they put them in car seats, they burp them, swaddle them,  and even give them a pacifier. Are you starting to get as freaked out as I am?
What was equally disturbing is the interview that coincided with this story. The journalists interviewed two women. One of the woman owned 28 "reborn dolls" and one woman owned 10. One had a complete nursery for their dolls-changing tables, cribs, etc. And yet, the  interviewers did not suggest these women were mentally unstable. In fact, they didn't even suggest that this was even a little "weird"! They treated them normally, as if this was just another person with an interest or hobby, like collecting stamps. I thought both of these women were certifiably insane-completely mad! And I thought the interviewer was just as crazy. Don't take my word for it-have a look for yourselves.

Jason Russell and Kony 2012/Invisible Children

For those of you who have been immersed in March Madness and/or preparing your taxes, you may not be aware of who Jason Russell is.  For the past several years, Jason Russell has devoted his life to making the U.S. and other countries aware of Joseph Kony, a Ugandan War Criminal. Joseph Kony abducts children in Uganda. He steals them from their parents; he makes them kill other people including their own parents; he forces them to mutilate the faces and bodies of others. He has taken over 30,000 children and turned the girls into sex slaves, and the boys into child soldiers. He has literally stolen their childhood and their opportunity to go to school. He has stolen their wills to live. This monster is not fighting for any specific cause. He and the LRA just want to maintain power. Until now, noone has tried to stop this horrific man.
Jason Russell has produced a 30 minute video, Kony2012.com / Invisible Children. Watch this powerful film. Only then you will understand how we have the power to change the course of human history and arrest Joseph Kony and stop the rebel group LRA. Through technology we can educate the world about this viscious man. Under President Obama, the unseen became visible. In October, 2011 American Advisors were sent in to Uganda to assess the situation and stop the LRA.  In order to find Kony, American Advisors must recommend we stay there and deploy soldiers to help this cause. Please go to Kony2012.com, sign your name. write a congressman. Donate to TRI. For a few dollars a month, you can aid in this fight. At the very least, watch the video. Educate yourselves. If you have children, this will literally take your breath away.
And, for those of you who saw Jason Russell's meltdown, please do not allow that to mar your effort to help this cause. We need to track down this war criminal and arrest him.  I, for one, am happy that Mr. Russell exists. His devotion to educate us on the evil atrocities Kony has committed is admirable and good.  We do have the ability to make a difference-let's start now.

DOUBTS

Tiger Woods-Really Tiger? You leave the Tournament sponsored by General Motors: Cadillac  and Buick are prominently advertising.  For goodness sakes, a buick was given away for a hole in one.
And your left leg hurts, so you walk to your MERCEDES and drive away. Are you kidding?????
No class and so ungracious..you are my achilles heel!

Dharun Ravi-bias intimidation, invasion of privacy....rough sentence, but they used you as an example
so that other students don't perform these "boyish pranks" on vulnerable kids at any age.

Rick Santorum
Newt Gingrich      This group of men will set women back 90 years. Any women who votes republican
Ted Nugent            needs to be institutionalized. We now have to prove the reason for taking birth
Rush Limbaugh      control-are you kidding? Limbaugh should be fired-do not patronize any of his
sponsors and stop watching ABC-his boss. And Newt-if you like the zoo so much,
go visit with the monkeys-they could teach you a thing or two. Rick-just keep
running. Obama say nothing-just watch, sit back and smile. Rick will dissolve the
republican party and you, Mr. President will win with ease....These men                  .
are dispicable. But, I thank them because Mitt will never get the electoral
votes he needs and Obama will win the election. Keep fighting boys!

Wall Trampoline- as an olympic sport? It looks too dangerous, but I think it wil happen. Cirque de
Soleil was the group that introduced it. Now it has become the new craze. Check
                              it out.

March in South Beach-so much fun!!!!

The last time I actually stayed in South Beach, I was about 7 years old. I have fond memories of the Eden Roc and my dad wearing a gold dinner jacket looking like Mack the Knife! Well, my dad hasn't changed all that much-he's still a dapper dresser and he still loves to party.  Miami, however, has changed significantly. I had the opportunity to explore for a few days recently and here are some suggestions if you are visiting. Five days is plenty!

Take a walk up and down Collins Avenue. Stop in at these hotels for a peek in their lobbies and go around back to check out their pools.
Loew's-which has a pretty fishtank in its lobby. That's the extent of what is nice.
Delano-pretty seedy in my estimation. Stuck in the 70's look. Needs revamping. Lunch at Bianco was
fair, but a pretty setting overlooking the pool. Nighttime-you cannot get into the club unless you
are famous or know someone at the door.
Settai-   by far the nicest hotel I have seen in a while. Check out the courtyard filled with water and
trees-you are transported to another country at night. The decor of the bar and the ceiling of the
restaurant is beyond amazing. Rooms start around $900/night. Go for drinks!
Fountainbleau- loved the lobby. They have kept this hotel's original shell and updated everything. The
bar in the lobby is amazing. The club "Liv" is  fabulous.  The restaurant, Hakkasan, is the
best Asian restaurant in Miami. And the pool is such a fun scene. This is where I would
want to stay without children OR with grandchildren! So many restaurants and things to
                        do for everyone.
Eden Roc-also has been redone and has a lovely lobby. didn't explore there.
Claridge-looked charming from the outside and a bit more reserved/and smaller than the others.
Perry Street- used to be the Gansevoort but became Perry Street. this is hip and cool, like the Delano.
Walk back along the boardwalk which is so scenic along the ocean.

Talk a walk on Lincoln Road. The first half closer to Collins Ave is honky tonk and horrid. Go down a
few blocks and there are lovely stores and courtyard restaurants. It's commercial, but fun for a few
hours of shopping and eating.
FYI-if you need a hair salon, at 1674 Meridian Ave.(off Lincoln Road), there is a salon called seandonaldson hair which will discount 20% on your first visit. They were very good.

Espanola Way-gorgeous street with flowering vines and restaurant. so much nicer than Lincoln Road and you feel transported to Positano for a moment!

Take a cab to the Design Area. It is around 40th Street and NE 2nd Ave.
The stores are magnificent. Each store is a feast for your eyes. Furniture, tile, lighting, and accessories are exquisite-the manner they display their merchandise is scintillating.....Each store is like a gallery filled with fine pieces, usually quite modern.  Interspersed are lovely little restaurants and stores. Check out a men's store called Duncan Quinn and ask for Grady. There is a branch also in NYC-it is absolutely beautiful! This is located at 4040 NE 2nd Ave.

Then for the women-hit Tommy Turchin jewelry at 130 NE 40th St. It is beautiful bead and stone creations, antique prayer boxes, lariats, rings, etc. The designers are a husband and wife team-worth a look. very pretty things...

Have a dinner at Barton G's on West Street. Food is good, but presentation is spectacular. You eyeball everything that passes you by and want to try it all. Another really fun spot for kids or adults. Then check out the Versace Mansion that Barton G's has taken over as an event space-it is supposedly very cool!

Finally-for a quarter, you can ride the Washington Street bus all the way down to the pier. Rent bikes
or walk along the water. You can see Fisher Island, the cruise ships, beautiful parks to relax in, and have a drink at Smith and Wollensky by the water. Or, ride your bikes into town and stop at News Cafe
for a snack-always a happening spot.

And if you are still  hungry at 3am, stop in at Washington Diner on 11th Street for fresh  roasted turkey sandwich-they roast  their turkey all day and they are open 24 hours! If you like diners-this is a must!

This show is my dirty little pleasure. I am obsessed with Gary Janetti, Brad Goresky's partner of 10 years. In the season finale, Gary plans an Anniversary Party with a special surprise for Brad. It is hysterical and touching all at the same time. I think I am the female version of Gary!

CLOTHING

Erin by Erin Featherstone

YOU'VE GOT TO HAVE FRIENDS

In the past several years, my husband and I have gone through lots of good times, some bad times, and a multitude of stresses. Without revealing what the subject matter of these times were about, I wanted to take a minute to let you know how much I value the people in my life. More specifically, my friends. I am a pretty independent lady. I love to be alone. I could spend days at a time reading a book in a room and never leaving.  I could probably go forever without making a phone call to the outside world. My best friend is my husband. Without question, he is the most extraordinary person in my life. (Sorry, my beautiful girls: I adore you both more than you can possibly imagine, but I always know he's the one person who's got my back every minute of every day).
And now, I need and want to give a shout out to the others in my life.  From college until now, I have amassed an amazing group of friends. Seriously, I am overly blessed in this arena. Usually, one does not find out who their friends are until illness happens. Yet, during one of the happiest times of my life, while planning my youngest daughter's upcoming wedding, I have come to realize how fortunate I am. Yes, this is an exciting and happy time, but it has also been filled with financial budgets and emotional stresses as well.  I wouldn't have the time or the words to acknowledge each and everyone of you that have been there for me on a daily basis not only for the last year, but for the last 30 years.  You must know who you are. Whether it's lunch at the diner, or the daily 5pm call during while we're making dinner, or saving the world under "the trees", or the offers to help me or to transport my family when life is a little too hectic for all of us, or the friday night drink and dinner(mostly drink!), or the planning and giving of my daughter's bridal shower,  or listening on a daily basis to the 900th detail I need to obsess about so it will be absolutely perfect for my exquisite bride's wedding day, or  just sitting with me by a Palm Beach Pool until 2 am and discussing what we still don't know about each other........I know you are ALWAYS there.
You  make my heart swell. The love I feel for all of you cannot be expressed. I feel incredibly blessed to have each and everyone of you in my life.  Most importantly, you make me feel loved from my head to my toes. And that is exactly the definition of what a friend does: they make you feel loved all the time, no matter what. I thank you and love you from the bottom of my heart.

WHITE IS THE NEW BLACK

Ok-So I think I performed pretty well. Five out of Seven isn't too bad. I admit Best Director could have gone either way and the Artist's director was the winner, not Scorsese for Hugo.
But, Meryl Streep for best actress? Come on-that threw everyone a curve-even Meryl. So that was a legitimate mistake because I really did believe Viola Davis was going to win.
Now for the fashion:

BEST DRESSED:

GWYNETH PALTROW: in white Tom Ford cap sleeve dress and cape. Smashing. Beautiful diamond
                                          cuff.

HONORABLE MENTIONS FOR BEST DRESSED:

CAMERON DIAZ: Strapless Gucci white dress (too much nips though) and HOT body. face looks
                                weirdly filled.
VIOLA DAVIS     : emerald Vera Wang looked stunning with her coloring. The earrings  by Lorraine Schwartz were two different earrings combined to create a gorgeous dangling drop effect.

ALL AROUND "JUST LOOKED GOOD":

JESSICA CHASTAIN: loved the Mcqueen gown. Few could pull that print off. And the $2 million
Harry Winston yellow diamonds didn't hurt her look either. Loved her hair
                                      as well.
LESLIE MANN:            Jud Apatow's wife was wearing a fabulous fitting navy Roberto Cavelli dress
Her sleek pulled back pony tail emphasized her gorgeous skin and earrings.
OCTAVIA SPENCER:  another who looked awesome in white. The Tadashi Soshi dress flattered her
figure and was the right choice.  Great Speech, too!

WORST DRESSED:

JENNIFER LOPEZ:      she looked like jenny from the block. very cheezy. bad choice. Lorraine
                                      Schwartz earrings were beautiful though.

SHALLENE WOODLEY:   I thought she was a mormon sister wife in Valentino Couture. The dress,
was not age appropriate. She makes poor choices at all award shows.

STACY KEIBLER:        Clooney's gal pal didn't do it for me. Many loved this gold Marchesa gown.
I wasn't feeling it....she looks like arm candy.

ROONEY MARA:       another woman in white. This Givency Couture didn't work for me. And I don't
care for the bangs. Dress too revealing for skinny girl.

BEST DRESSED MALE:

SEAN COMBS:            looked like he just stepped out of GQ.
TOM CRUISE AND BRAD PITT:  were both pretty easy on the eyes too.

BEST SPEECH

Meryl Streep:            she looked the best she has looked in the past 3 award shows. Loved that she
acknowledged her husband first. AND, I loved she was equally
thrilled her makeup guy of 30 years won an oscar for The Iron Lady.
                                  She is a class act.................

Debie's Oscar Predictions

I can't wait for the Oscars! I love the movies as much as I love to eat and breathe! I have seen most of the movies and want to get in my predictions before Sunday night. Here they are.

BEST PICTURE

The Artist. This should be the winner. But The Help was very good and it is politically correct and relevant so it could beat The Artist. Still, I believe The Artist is the clear winner.

BEST DIRECTOR

Hugo.  This was the most amazing 3D film ever made. I know this is a bold statement-but, seriously it is awesome. Life changing for me-REALLY. That being said, I bet The Artist's director, Michel Hazanavicius, will win. Scorsese so deserves it though for a super charming story.

BEST ACTOR
Jean Dujardin in The Artist. He was mesmerizing. Deserves it over whiny, cuckolded Clooney!

BEST ACTRESS

Michelle Williams in My Week with Marilyn. This performance is haunting. I firmly believe she should win the award. But again, with the Civil Rights theme and its importance, Viola Davis, who too, had an outstanding performance, will probably take the Oscar.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

Christopher Plummer in The Beginners. Hands down-no competition. This is the guy. Long overdue. Go see this movie. He rocks!

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Octavia Spencer in The Help. Very deserving. BUT so were a bunch of the other actresses in this film and they weren't even nominated. For instance: Emma Stone, Jessica Chastain, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sissy Spacek, etc.

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

Midnight in Paris by Woody Allen.  This is one of his best.  Right up there with Annie Hall. He will win.
