Lots to talk about. Let's start with recent movies.
All is Lost-Robert Redford is the only actor and speaks two times. Virtually, no dialogue. The acting is phenomenal. Redford is hot-still gorgeous but weathered, like a Ralph Lauren model. Loved this movie. Beware-not a flick for those who will fall asleep easily...
Nebraska-Bruce Dern is terrific. Another old timer hits it out of the park. Supporting cast is great, too. Dern's wife steals the movie.
12 Years a Slave- Beyond amazing. So powerful. VERY VERY difficult to watch. But, worth every minute. Top pick of the year.
Last Vegas-a "good" bad movie. Fun to watch, especially for 70 year olds and older. Lesson to be learned: let your parents keep their independence as long as they want it.
Gravity-Hated this movie. Stupid, bad acting, no point to the plot....apparently, the rest of the world disagrees. So go see it for yourselves.
Next, lets move on to television.
Getting On-Sunday nights HBO. At first, I didn't like this show about the staff on an elderly wing of a hospital. I must say, it is now starting to grow on me. Not sure if I would recommend getting vested though.
Jamie-Sunday nights HBO. Dislike this show about a teenage girl (played by a guy). Not funny-at least not to me.
Masters of Sex-Sunday nights Showtime. A good view of what society was like back in the 60's and 70's. Worth a nod.
Homeland-Sunday nights Showtime. Everyone thinks this is the best show on television. I will have to take their word for it, since I don't watch.
Mob City-on TNT. Ed Burns and lots of recognizable actors. Looks promising.
Treme-Sunday Nights HBO. I watch it, I like it a lot, but I don't know what it is about. Drama in New Orleans with the season premiere set on the eve of Obama's win for President. Interesting.
The Sound Of Music-The music was great. Carrie Underwood did a good job with the tunes. The acting, however, really was quite deficient.
Best Interview I read recently...
Read the interview in the New York Times Style Section this past Sunday(12/8). Jon Waters is beyond hysterical-REALLY FUNNY, I swear.
Concerts Worth Mentioning......
Steve Wynwood and Rod Stewart at the Pru Center in Newark-Wynwood knocked it out of the park. Lots of songs from his Traffic Album-totally awesome. Rod Stewart put on a great concert. It is a real production-lights, gorgeous girls, costume changes-I felt like I was at a Bar Mitzvah party.
Pink-also at the Pru Center in Newark. An amazing talent. Beautiful voice, Rockin' body, and tremendous entertainer. Worth every second.
Books still waiting to be read on my nightstand......
The Killer Detail by Amanet and Quin
The People in the Trees by Hanya Yanagihara
The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt
The Flamethrowers by Rachel Kushner
Recent Restaurants I ate at......
Carbone-upscale Italian. Hottest ticket in NY now. Lots of money needed. food just ok. A real scene.
Galli-Italian. First time I liked it a lot. Second time didn't like as much. Good soundtracks.
Arturos-Italian. Fell into before a concert. cute neighborhood joint. Staff sings. pizzeria with decent pizza. fun and unpretentious.
Rubirosa-Italian. good pizza, good food. fair prices. happening cute village spot. not an easy res to get. another unpretentious fun spot.
Il Cantinori-Italian. Always a solid meal. Great service. Can't go wrong with the food. Village favorite.
Ngam-Thai. nothing special. inexpensive decent thai. Zucchini pad thai is good for those who don't eat pasta.
The National-in The Benjamin Hotel. Great for lunch and Sunday brunch. good location. perfect if you are shopping midtown

Caretaker for the young and the old
This summer I had the great fortune having my parents visit from Florida for almost a month. One of these weeks My husband and I rented a home in Rhode Island and hosted my parents (mom is almost 87 and Dad is almost 90), my daughters, their husbands, and my 14 month old grandson.
What I came to realize during the summer, was that I was constantly worrying about my parents and my grandson- although they were on the opposite end of the age spectrum. They both had similar needs and wants, and generated like concerns for me.
First and foremost, there are several flights of steps in my home and in the vacation home. I was constantly making sure the baby wouldn't go near the steps and fall down. Each time my parents would go up the steps or come down, I wanted to assist them for fear they would hurt themselves as well. I installed night lights everywhere and provided flashlights and gates so these areas would be well lit and secure for everyone. But that brings me to the "independence" issue. Of course, the 14 month baby thinks he can go anywhere and do anything. He has absolutely no fear. And guess what, so do my parents! They want their independence and fight me every inch of the way. I get it-they are youthful, healthy, and want to live their lives by themselves for as long as they can. Yet, truth be told, their balance is a little different, and they are not as steady on their feet as they once were. As for my grandson, he is not as steady on his feet as he will soon become...
The next issue I encountered was where we could eat where we would be served quickly and how noisy it would be. The very young and old do not exhibit a lot of patience or the ability to sit and dine for an extended period of time. I found myself having a lot of anxiety at mealtimes that were in restaurants. I wanted menus right away, the drink order taken at the same time as the food order, and the check as soon as we were finished. If it was too loud, my Dad could not hear anyone. Yet, that would hide my grandson's funny screeches which was good. Also, my grandson needed food shortly after we sat down and so did my parents! If service was too slow, the meal did not go well. As a result, preparing meals at home were much more relaxing and far easier.
Finally, we had to plan our activities around the baby's nap schedule AND how long my parents could be out before they got worn out. There was a limited amount of time before everyone needed to rest. Trying to coordinate all these issues made me realize that I was caring for my aging parents exactly in the same manner as my little grandson. As our parents age, we, their children, tend to their needs as if they were our children. Funny- they raised us, took great care of us, and allowed us to become independent adults. Now, all these years later, we have the privilege and responsibility of taking care of our parents and grandchildren. The struggle for us is making sure they are all safe and healthy while allowing them to maintain some independence. Not only is this frustrating for me but I understand it is incredibly frustrating for them as well. We all just need to do the best we can and feel blessed they are here to teach us these life lessons.

A Few of My Favorite Things
As many of you know, jewelry and skin care (products) are a few of my very favorite things to collect.
Currently, I have been using a bunch of items that I swear by and want to share with you.
My major passion and indulgence is microdermabrasion every 8-12 weeks. I prefer the older machines as opposed to the newer versions . The latter, in my opinion, are too gentle and do not achieve results. Microderm is an exfoliating treatment which removes dead skin and generates collagen renewal. I love it best when I turn red and peel. That's when I know it's really doing the job. No botox, fillers, or surgery is necessary. Keep in mind that a proficient aesthetician is key. Remember to do neck and chest as well as your face.
In between these sessions, I use Natura Bisse's glycolic peel in a bottle. You apply this several times a week to maintain healthy skin. It is fabulous, but be prepared to pay for it's effectiveness. $250 dollars! available on line or Neiman's.
Vaseline intensive care has created a new product called spray and go. It comes in 3 types. I like the plain one and use it every morning right after stepping out of the shower. It moisturizes the skin and absorbs fast so you can get dressed seconds after you spray it on your entire body. Just rub in and go like the commercial says. It is the first time I don't feel like moisturizing your body is a chore.
Next are the facial treatments: First I start with La Roche-Posay Derm AOX Vitamin C Serum. Then I use Roc's 2 step Day activating serum and then the Day rejuvenating crème which has an spf of 20. . They also make an eye treatment that I apply called the Roc Complete lift contouring eye roller. I received these items as a gift and think they are great. There is only one eye concealer for me: Sonia Kashluk's eye concealer palette available at Target-it is quite simply the best out there with 3 different colors of cream and one base powder.
When I finally get around to applying my primer or base, I start with Chanel's Le Blanc/color 10 Rosee . This is a light revealing brightening makeup base with a broad spectrum spf of 30. And the foundation I finally apply is Chanel's Vitalumiere Aqua, which is an ultralight skin perfecting sunscreen makeup. This also has an spf of 15. Sunscreen in summer, winter, spring and fall is extremely necessary-even on a dark cloudy day.
Later in the day or early evening, when I need to refresh my makeup, I rarely reapply foundation. Rather I use Colorscience illuminating serum in champagne kiss. This gives a great dewy look and achieves a well rested appearance
For eyes, I am loving Anastasia Eye Shadow Palette#1 or Laura Mercier's combo of 10 shadows, 2 blushes, 1 shimmer and 3 powder liners complete with 3 brushes. It's the bomb. In the mascara category, I like Loreal's Telescopic explosion in carbon black. And the liners I adore are by Buxom or eyeko'.
At night, reach for any retin a product and mix with your favorite moisturizer. Presently, I am using PCA intensive age refining treatment which is 0.5 % pure retinol night cream. I also like Strivectin-SD for face and around eyes or Prevage as intermittent options in between the retin a.
The true key to nice skin is genetic, along with lots of care and no sun exposure ever...And finally, change your regime and products often. I use different products all the time. I feel your skin looks better when you don't use the same regime day in and day out. And do not forget to moisturize your hands, and neck, and chest. Start in your 20's-it makes a difference and you will look younger if your hands and neck don't reveal your true age.

What you MUST know about ObamaCare (which begins October 1st)
Regardless of what Conservative Republicans are spewing about ObamaCare, the truth is that this allows all individuals in our country to have health insurance, which is absolutely the way it should be. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) will expand access to insurance for all individuals, small groups, and young adults who do not presently have health insurance; including those with pre-existing conditions. It will create a market for those who are unable to get insurance through their job.
Most likely, individuals who already have coverage or receive coverage from a large employer will probably not see any changes. And if you are happy with your insurance, you do not have to do anything-you keep it just the way it is.
THE BIGGEST CHANGE: NJ LAW NOW ALLOWS QUALIFIED DEPENDENTS OF INSURED PEOPLE TO CONTINUE COVERAGE UNTIL AGE 31-IT USED TO BE AGE 26.
The law defines an eligible dependent as a child of a subscriber who is:
unmarried or not in a civil union
has no dependents
is 30 years old or younger
is either a NJ resident, or enrolled as a full time student at an accredited school
People can shop for health insurance on the Health Insurance Marketplace and the Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP) starting 10/1.
You can see side by side comparisons of various plans and decide what's best for you.
Once you purchase your plan, you can start using the health insurance on 1/1/2014.
The Affordable Health Care Act broadens member benefits. The new plans you purchase MUST cover 10 categories of services:
Hospitalization, Outpatient services, Emergency service, Maternity and newborn care,
Prescription drugs, Lab services, Pediatric service (oral and vision included), Mental health/substance abuse, Rehabilitative services and devices, AND most important, Preventative and wellness services(blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol screenings, mammograms, colonoscopies, flu and pneumonia shots, osteoporosis screenings.
What everyone should realize is that:1) Obamacare created penalties to hospitals that had high rates of patient readmission and also, high rates of infection. And guess what? This year Medicare has stated that patient readmission fell. 2) Obamacare created Accountable Care Organizations where " Doctors get paid based on their patients medical outcome, instead of how many tests/procedures they perform."
3) Electronic records and new technology now being utilized by Doctors and hospitals has created more efiicient and cost saving practices.
Health-care inflation is at its lowest level since 2011. Six hundred BILLION has already been cut from the anticipated 10 year spending total for Medicare&Medicaid.
Premiums are significantly lower than forecasted.
You are now asking who pays for insurance for people who are too sick or too poor to purchase insurance on their own? Well, the money will come from a)
higher taxes on the rich b)the savings I mentioned above from Medicare and c) having young, healthy people (who previously did not have coverage) to enroll in the new system. These 25 million new customers to the insurance industry will ultimately keep costs down. And, lo and behold, "evidence so far suggests that Obamacare's cost reforms are a staggering success."
As Jonathan Chait states in New York Magazine, "permanent health-care reform would define Obama as a Reaganesque transformative figure, rather than the failure conservatives still hope him to be remembered as."

Can You Feel It In The Air?
Here we are again-the warm days of September are here with a hint of crispness in the air. There is no better season, and no more beautiful time of the year in the Northeast. With the weather change, comes the new fashions for fall. Spending lots on clothes is not my thing, but I love fashion and a good find. After paging through tons of catalogues, these are my recommendations.
Bang for the Buck

Forget Jimmy Choo, Christian Loubitin, Manolo, Ferragamo, and Giuseppe Zanotti!

Check out her Caria Flat for $99.95. DV by Dolce Vita "Joust" bootie in black or
brown suede is $99.00 and simple and cool.

YEA-Summer's Ending/Fall is coming..
We have a few more weeks of summer, before Autumn, my FAVORITE season, begins. Many of you will have August vacations coming and I have a few new recommendations you might want to explore on your down time.
On the television front, there's lots happening. Beginning on August 19th, Regis Philbin returns to television. He will be hosting a show called "Crowd goes Wild" for
Fox Sports network everyday at 5p.m. Now he can sleep late before work.
Keith Olbermann who, as you may remember, was fired from Current TV in 2012 returns to tv and is going back to his roots. He will be discussing sports, not politics, on ESPN starting August 26th at 11p.m. Don't be surprised if he sneaks in a few liberal opinions about the country's government. Interestingly enough, Nate Silver has left the New York Times to be a regular contributor on the Olbermann show. Stay tuned.
Finally, if you missed Larry David's tv movie, Clear History, on HBO last Saturday-
try to catch it on demand. If you are a David fan, you will enjoy it. It's basically a long episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm. The cast is terrific, especially Liev Shreiber
(who doesn't even have a credit). And the band Chicago plays a large role in the movie so there are lots of great songs throughout. If Larry makes you cringe, avoid this at all costs.
On the movie front, check out Woody Allen's new movie, Blue Jasmine. Cate Blanchett is fabulous and the movie is good, not great. The cast is great, not good.
Andrew Dice Clay and Bobby Cannavale are superb.
Yes, I was desperate and bored so I went to see We are the Millers. I liked the movie. It was stupid and funny. It's good for a giggle. If you are a guy, it is definitely worth the price of admission to see Jennifer Anniston in a minimum of three scenes in a minimum of underwear. Jason Sudeikis and Emma Roberts also star in the flick. Bottom line: it's a good "bad" movie. Wait for it to go on demand.
Keep an eye out for The Butler and Jobs coming out this weekend.
If you prefer to read, check out a young new author debuting her first novel. It has gotten rave reviews by all. The book is: The People in the Trees by Hanya Yanagihara.
Now for the shoppers out there-Check out designer Philip Lim's clothing and accessories made especially for Target. The line will be in stores on September 15th. I can't wait!
Then stop over at Sephora for your makeup fix. Products I love are Buxom's pen and ink long last eyeliner; Highbeam highlighter by Benefit; and Jin soon nail lacquer which is only available on line. This polish is the Best! It is a long lasting chip proof polish that comes in exquisite colors. Try their power coat and top coat too. It's expensive but well worth it.
And, if you need the gift of the moment for young girls between ages of 8-15, the newest craze is Rainbow Loom bracelets. They are easy and fun to create on a mini loom. Good luck finding the kit in stock. Available at Michael's arts and crafts stores.

It's been a while.....
I haven't blogged in a while so I have many different things to discuss.
Television Series
MAGIC CITY-on Starz. This show is in its second season. It takes place in 1959 at the Miramar Playa Hotel in Miami. This hotel, Miramar Playa is very similar to the Fountainbleu or Eden Roc during this time. The owner of the hotel, Ike Evans, is played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who is sensational and easy on the eyes. His nemesis is probably the scariest villain on television these days. That character is Ben Diamond, king of Miami's underworld, and is played by actor Danny Huston. These characters have viceral hate for one another and the story plot revolves around their business wars. You will be shaking watching Danny Huston in this role. He literally makes your skin crawl. Violence ensues.
RAY DONOVAN-on Showtime. Jon Voight and Liev Schreiber star in this series about a Professional fixer in L.A.(Schreiber) and the hateful (non) relationship with his father (Jon Voight), who has just been released from prison. Jon Voight is beyond spectacular in this role. A definite must to watch. LOVE the show.
NEWSROOM-On HBO. Great ensemble cast. Irritating dialogue where the characters constantly talk over one another. It is the best of Aaron Sorkin and the worst of Aaron Sorkin. I continue to watch the series, but it is mediocre. Not one his better shows.
THE HAVES AND THE HAVE NOTS-on Own network. This is a nighttime a soap opera developed by Tyler Perry. The acting, however is super. A close second in the villain category (Ben Diamond/Magic City) is played by Tika Sumpter as Candace Young. She is beautiful, smart, and terribly evil. Remember the show Dynasty? Candace is more horrific than Joan Collins in Dynasty.. Tika Sumpter deserves an emmy for this role. The actress, Crystal Fox, playing her mother, Hanna Young is equally great. Has a fabulous cast. The women will like this show. Men will not!
MILLION DOLLAR LISTING NYC-on Bravo. Three realtors battle for the opportunity to get pricey listings in NYC. It makes you see firsthand how morally corrupt and dishonest many of these brokers are, and how often they play the buyers against the sellers. Tune in to see Frederik, Luis, and Ryan. It's fun to see locations you know and what they actually sell for in NYC- the prices are insane, but you know that!
Who Knew About This?
Television
LARRY KING-on RT America Network. Check out his new show about politics. You can catch it on Hulu.Com or Rt.com
FUNNY OR DIE'S BILLY ON THE STREET-on Fuse. Comedian Billy Eichner is hysterical in little vignettes.
The Web
IMMACULATE INFATUATION-a website that is right up my alley. Discussions about food in the NYC area. And, it also tells you the stars favorite spots to chow down.
Upcoming Shows
A NIGHT WITH JANIS JOPLIN-opening at The Lyceum Theatre on Broadway on 9/20. Mary Bridget Davies stars as Janis. If you haven't heard her sing-she is extraordinary. This will be a hard ticket to come by.
Food/Restaurants
Do or Dine- Brooklyn. Many options. Are you up for a foie gras donut? yuck!
Blue Ribbon Beer Garden-190 Allen Street in the Thomson Hotel. Nice outside terrace on the 2nd floor. Loads of beer choices but only 3 entrees: Cornish hen, ribs, vegetable platter. And there's ping pong! cool..
Dominique Ansel's Bakery-189 Spring Street. By now you have all heard of the infamous cronut. If you haven't, you most likely live under a rock. Anyway, a cronut is half croissant and half donut. They are hard to acquire and most likely you will need to wait on line for hours. However, I can't understand why people just don't buy the infamous DKA instead. This is a croissant with carmelized crust. OR his other delectable creation, The Paris? This is a pastry with chocolate, caramel, and peanut butter filling-YUM! Mr. Ansel rose to fame as Daniel Boulud's executive pastry chef, before going out on his own. Worth the wait?
Movies
THE WAY WAY BACK-Best movie of the summer. May even be in my top 20. Coming of Age story about an awkward, insecure teen played by Liam James. He gains his confidence by working for an offbeat manager of a water park, played by Sam Rockwell. Rockwell steals the movie and deserves an academy award. Run don't walk to see this. You will smile for days afterward.
FRUITVALE STATION-a true story about a young black boy killed for no reason, on New Year's day in 2009. . Takes place in the San Francisco Bay area. Stars Michael B. Jordan who is absolutely riveting. His mother, played by Octavia Spencer, also gives (another) award winning performance. VERY difficult to sit through. As one reviewer said, "Imagine Trayvon Martin as a white kid. Would there be as many commentators speculating that Trayvon's attitude caused his own death at the hands of a man who stalked him with a gun?" This movie is so timely and so powerful.Go see this movie. Make your teens see this movie!

GOING OUT ON A LIMB
Driving home this weekend, a song came on the radio. Not just any song-the BEST song!
This precipitated a discussion with my husband as to what songs, Broadway shows, food, books, etc. are favorites. I may be going out on a limb, and keep in mind that I was a teen in the 60's and 70's, which has a definite impact on my opinions. The following are my choices. Keep an open mind.
BEST SONG EVER
Suite Judy Blue Eyes-Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. This is still my all time favorite band.
HONORABLE MENTIONS
Hey Jude-The Beatles
Norwegion Wood-The Beatles
Rocketman-Elton John
BEST PLAY/SHOW EVER
Guys and Dolls
HONORABLE MENTIONS
The Sound of Music
Gypsy
Pippin
BEST ALBUM EVER
Beatles White Album (there is not one bad song on this, not one!)
HONORABLEMENTIONS
Born To Run-Bruce Springsteen. I know many of you out there think Bruce is the best
ever. Keep in mind-I am not as young as you. He's is great-just not my great.
Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, & Thyme-Simon and Garfunkel
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band-The Beatles
BEST MOVIE EVER
The Graduate-hands down, the best from my generation. It exemplified the angst of my
generation and the stress of what to do once college was over-Much like today!
HONORABLE MENTIONS
The Godfather I and II
Goodfellas
Pulp Fiction
The Shining
Rear Window
Annie Hall
The Shawshank Redemption
BEST BOOK EVER
Prince of Tides by Pat Conroy
HONORABLE MENTIONS
Candide by Voltaire
Atonement by Ian McEwan
Almost everything written by John Irving (A Prayer for Owen Meeney, Cider House Rules, In One Person,
etc.)
Almost everything written by Philip Roth
Almost everything written by John Updike
BEST MEAL EVER
Stretch's Belmont Tavern-Bloomfield Ave. Belleville. You either get this place or
you don't. You always have to wait-no reservations. Eat the chicken savoy, long hot peppers
and ziti with pot cheese. Also fab is chicken murphy, mad chicken, shrimp beeps. Serious
ly, you will dream about this food weeks after you consumed it. It is THAT good!!!
HONORABLE MENTIONS
Pommes Frites -2nd Ave. East Village, NYC. I know -this isn't a meal, but these fries and
all the sauce choices are to die for. When you decide to throw your diet to the wind, go here
after a night of drinking-beyond good, I promise!
Donut Plant-Grand Street, NYC. If you don't like donuts, stop reading now. If you love them
as much as I do, then this is THE SPOT! Try peanut butter and jelly, crème brulee, and
carrot cake. Bring a ton of dinero-each donut is costly. You must buy a dozen, because there
is no way you are stopping after one. Again, I realize this isn't a meal but it is worth the
trip and giving up eating for a week after you indulge.
The Meatball Shop-4 locations in the city. You customize the "balls": either chicken, pork,
beef, veal, veggie. You customize the sauce: tomato, pesto, etc. You pick the sides: pasta,
polenta, beans, spinach. It is a great meal. End with a custom ice cream sandwich between
two cookies. Forgot the 4 star restaurants-this is nirvana.
BEST WRITTEN TELEVISION IN A LONG TIME!
The Girls-by Lena Dunham and Jud Apatow. I totally loved this season's final episode.
I am still smiling about the clever script. I was literally glued to the screen and have
watched the episode two more times. Where do I begin? I love the depth and com-
plexity of every character. The series touches on the social anxiety of these people, how
technology transforms our communication skills, and the struggle for identity. The series
focuses on twenty somethings, that are over educated, upper middle class youths competing for jobs
with thousands of others in NYC just like them.
The episode opens where Hannah is in emotional and physical pain. Her OCD has re-
appeared. She is vulnerable and scared. She reaches out to her dad, her editor, leaves an
insanely hysterical message to her friend, Jessa, and calls Adam. The only person who is "there" for
her is Adam. He literally drops everything and comes running. Up until this moment, you
hated the guy. Now, suddenly, he seems likeable and kind.
Shoshanna desperately wanted a boyfriend and suddenly realizes the one she has is
holding her back. She becomes more confident, gains independence, and despite her
earlier protests to her boyfriend, Ray-the show ends with her hooking up with a "blond"
guy in a bar. Her confrontation with Ray where she breaks up is masterfully written: She
tells him: "You hate colors, you hate pillows, you hate ribbons, you hate everything!"
I can't be the only thing you like.
As for Marnie, I am unsure if getting back with Charlie is a satisfying ending to the
season. She seems self absorbed and to like him (again) because he is successful. I am not
falling for her protests to Charlie that she doesn't care about his financial success. We will
see.
This finale was a "dazzling piece of filmmaking". You don't have to like the
characters to enjoy this show and its genius. Lena Dunham is spectacular.

Bad JuJu
Recently, I traveled to Hawaii for a little rest and relaxation in Lanai. While in Lanai, we would walk the exquisite beaches each day and see the springer dolphins. The sand was pristine and it was most unusual because there wasn't one shell to be found. I would watch crabs run into their holes and wonder why no shells were washed onto the beach. On all of my travels, I either collect rocks or shells and place them in small boxes around my home. So, needless to say, I was disappointed to come up short in Hawaii. As I was walking, it occurred to me that I could collect the beautiful lava rocks that bordered the ocean. I began to pick up red, black, and brown rocks and I was happy in the knowledge that I would have some beautiful reminders from this trip to bring home.
On the last evening of our stay in Lanai, we were having a great dinner at Nobu. We got into a discussion with our waitress about the lack of any shells on the beaches. She informed us that on some beaches, there were shells and on others, there were none. I then proceeded to tell her that I had collected lava rock in lieu of the shells. Her smile instantly turned to a grimace and she told me that I must NEVER displace the lava rock from the beach. I would get "BAD JUJU"! What the hell is bad juju? Someone who doesn't observe the Jewish Holidays? Or a bad piece of candy?
JuJu is a term that originally travelled to America from West Africa. You can receive good juju
by saving a kitten or returning someone's lost wallet. In other words, if you perform any good deed, you can have good juju. Apparently, what I did by taking the rocks and displacing the natural habitat was very bad. I, or my family and friends would forever be haunted by a bad vibe or aura. Terrible things would come my way if I didn't return those rocks. Oy vay, I started to shake. A panic attack ensued. More vodka was needed. Everyone knows you don't walk under ladders; you never open an umbrella inside the house; you can't put a hat on the bed; if you enter at the front door, you must exit by the same door, and heaven forbid a black cat crosses my path, I will take an alternative route an hour out of my way just to change my direction. You get the point-I am very superstitious.
The waitress suggested that we return the rocks to the exact spot we removed them from and all would be right with the world again. Don't you know I was on that beach the next morning with those rocks in hand? I walked back to the place where they had been and quickly replaced them. NO MORE BAD JUJU for me!!!
However, once I returned home, something happened. I was walking in my daughter's apartment without my shoes and stubbed my toe. I didn't just stub it-upon closer inspection, it was hanging off my foot. So, today, I went to see the foot Dr. and guess what? I fractured the toe. Now for 4 weeks I must tape it and wear a crazy shoe to keep it stable. Was this bad juju or just a mere coincidence? I don't know which it was. I am not taking any chances. Tomorrow I will go out and feed a homeless person, donate clothes to the salvation army, and give some money to a needy charity. I have to get some good juju ASAP so I can reverse the spell.

GROWING OLD
Just yesterday I was 20. I was at Penn, getting a great education and also partying a lot of time with my wonderful friends (who are still very much a major part of my life today). Often, I would leave my dorm for one date, come back around 11p.m. and change my clothes, and then go out on the next date! I loved to dance, meet new people, and stay up all night. Well, not much has changed. I still have amazing friends (both from my college years and now from my current life), I still love to party and stay up all night, I still love to dance (but no one wants to go with me!), and most of all, I enjoy meeting new people.
But the big difference is, it is years later and I am now 58! I have been married for over 35 years to the man of my dreams(STILL!). I have two married daughters and one grandson. I have downsized and moved out of my house into a condo. And I am closer to death than birth. It's a scary scenario. When I get together with friends, the discussion often turns to our ailments, our medications, our post menopausal symptoms, and what body parts could use refreshing. Some of us are doing our faces, others are replacing hips or knees, and still others are buying lots of new cosmetic dentistry. Boy, did my (dentist) dad retire too soon! He would have made a fortune if he was still practicing. And that leads me to another topic: people I know are retiring or are already retired. How can that be?
This morning when my husband jumped back into bed, I told him he needed to have a dermatologist check something new on his face! That was so romantic! Is this what our lives have come to! He replied: "when did we get so old?" We used to be so young!
Well, this is what I have decided. I am going to face everyday from here on in with a positive attitude. I am going to get excited about going to Hawaii and not moan about the long plane ride which could cause blood clots if I don't get up enough and walk around! I am going to crawl around on the floor with my grandson and pretend I, too, am a toddler full of curiosity and wonder. I will not be a jaded cranky old lady. EVER. I will get more apps for my I phone! I will no longer talk about my ailments, cholesterol, medications and heartburn. And I WILL dance my ass off, just as soon as I get that new hip! And for all of you that don't know it yet, that is a lot sooner than you think.

Living in The Moment-The Joy of Being a Grandma
Not so long ago, I would get shocked responses when I told people how old my daughters were. People would say you are too young to have kids that old! Lately, that has not been the case! But I really don't mind. Yes, it is true that we live in a society that worships beauty and youth. The elderly do not seem to command the respect they once did when extended families and our grandparents often lived in the same household. How can we restore the value and respect for the elderly in our society? How do we develop a more caring nation? It is my hope that by spending time with your grandchildren, they will learn from you, love you, and value you.
I, personally, have always valued old people. They have so much knowledge, so many stories to tell, and so much to teach us. My friends often complain that their parents are a burden. I feel my parents are a blessing. I always feel gratitude that my children have had the benefit of having most of their grandparents alive and hoped that they value those relationships. My paternal grandparents died early but I loved the time I got to spend with my maternal grandparents. I have fond memories of Fanny and Max. Today, I feel it is a privilege to be a part of my grandson's life. I feel so incredibly lucky. Being a parent is a full time job-it is a lifetime commitment that has many emotional ups and downs. It was and is hard work filled with much worry and many, many rewards. And that job never ends. But as grandparent, you are no longer in charge. You no longer have to multitask. You don't feel the same level of stress. You can just be.
My grandson has my full attention whenever he wants it. Hopefully, spending time with him will teach him the value of the elderly (that's me and Pops!). He will look forward to spending time with us and not think of it as a chore. Rather it will be an adventure!
Part of being "Nonni" means you have a free pass to sing and dance like a madwoman, and get some guffaws and giggles. No grownups are there to judge your silly behavior (except maybe my daughter and son-in-law). By spending time with your grandchild, you will gently try and transmit values, ethics, kindness, and respect towards others. I am sure my own children and their peers critically examine how they were raised and then decide what their parents (my husband and I) did wrong and what they will do differently with their own children. I, too, did exactly that. And, although my parents are terrific, the major mistake they made was choosing to move away from their children and grandchildren. They missed out on the greatest experiences ever. And, my daughters missed out as well. I am never moving away! People often say the good thing about being a grandparent is you can give the child back to the parents. Actually, I think that's the worst thing about being a grandparent! I don't like having to give him back! My grandson makes it all worthwhile. When I am with him, no problems exist-I live in the moment. It is pure ecstasy! I can't imagine missing out on all of this fun.
So, what is the reason for all this sappy babble? Well, I am going to visit my parents (yup, the ones that moved away) for an entire week. I can't wait to spend time with my mom and dad. But, I am already in withdrawal knowing I can't see my grandson for eight days! I know he will not even know I am gone, but I will miss him like the dickens...
I hope he remembers me-maybe I will bring him a pet alligator for the bathtub. That ought to make his mom and dad very happy! And so my spoiling begins..
Elizabeth Berg says, "Obviously there was something to this grandmother business. So far as I could tell, it was like being the queen of England, minus the inconvenience of having to wear a crown."

Television and Books-2013
This past Sunday evening presented a big dilemma for me. What to do? Golden Globes, Girls, Californication, House of Lies, Shameless, and Downton Abbey all airing at the same time.....
So, I went with the globes (see previous blog) and then watched all the other episodes on demand.
For those fans of Californication, we are lucky enough to have the first two episodes already on demand.
Let's start with Californication. I totally love this series. Every character is a hoot. Hank Moody
played by David Duchovny is a train wreck you can't avert your eyes away from. I adore his baby momma, Natasha McElhorne and his daughter, played by Madeleine Martin. This season there is an intervention to get Hank to cease his drinking binges. He goes to rehab and we will see how long that lasts. Also, enjoyable to watch are his agent Evan Handler (Charlie Runkel) and Charlie's ex, Pam Adlon (Marcy). This ensemble cast is sensational-I am always sad when the episode is over! Watch-you will not be disappointed.
I can't say the same for House of Lies which stars Don Cheadle and Kristen Bell. This series is about a management consulting firm. The writing and story lines are redundant and boring. I love Don Cheadle, but this isn't a great vehicle for him. I predict this series won't last.
On the other hand, Shameless which stars William Macy as Frank, an alcoholic and father of 6; Emmy Rossum, as his daughter, Fiona, and Joan Cusack, as the agoraphobic neighbor, are accomplished actors in a great series. Every actor is multi-layered and engaging. I think Emmy Rossum steals the show as the only functioning adult who is forced to take on the responsibility of raising her other 5 siblings, since Frank is usually in a gutter somewhere sleeping off his drinking binge. Tune in. FYI-Rossum has a new album out and her voice is really amazing-who knew?
Downton Abbey-I am brand new to this series. I haven't watched the first two seasons. I just picked it up this season and have watched the first two episodes. I totally understand what is going on, and I don't feel the need to watch the previous seasons. The acting seems amazing, the stories of the rich family upstairs and the servants downstairs seem interesting. I am not as over the moon about this series as the rest of you seem to be. I will continue to watch before I give you my final answer.
Jimmy Kimmel in the new 11:35 time slot: I like Kimmel a lot and think he has a great show. I watched the premier with Jennifer Aniston. First, she destroyed his set with a sledgehammer and then she cut his hair. I thought it was a little gimmicky, but he got the viewers. He beat out Letterman and came close to beating Leno. My prediction: He will be the next Carson. Oh-one more thing, I think Jennifer Aniston is very pregnant! The peplum look didn't succeed in hiding her butt or baby bump. just sayin'.....
Just Finished the book, The Middlesteins by Jami Attenberg. Attenberg is a great writer. She creates complex, tragic characters that you care about and relate to. loved it!
Presently reading George Saunders, Pastoralia. ( I tried to buy Tenth of December but Barnes and Noble didn't have it after The New York Times did a piece on it two weekends ago). So far, I have no clue what is happening in the first story. I feel like I am reading Vonnegut-will I actually ever understand what Saunders is writing about? Hope so.
Dr. Ian Smith has written a new Diet book, Shred: 6 weeks, 4 inches, 2 sizes. This is a low GI diet, which stresses meal spacing, meal replacement, and low calorie snacks. No different than any other diet book. We all know what to do-there is no magic bullet. Eat less. Exercise differently (keep switching up the routine), Exercise harder each day, Exercise Everyday (at least 6 days), and keep your portions very small. Do all that and in 6 weeks, you will lose 2 sizes. If you follow it, it does work. The trick is to stick with it!
One Final note on the food scene; The Regency Hotel is closing for a year renovation. This leaves all the high powered breakfast patrons at a loss, not to mention all the Michael Feinstein fans. Where will all the power brokers eat their eggs in the meantime? Will it be the new Sirio's? The Four Seasons? or Michael's? My bet is Sirio's....

Golden Globes-2013
For those of you who didn't watch The Golden Globes, you didn't miss much. It was a total snooze.
That is not to say that there weren't some interesting spots. My favorite "barb" came from Amy Poehler addressing Katheryn Bigelow: "I haven't really been following the controversy over Zero Dark Thirty but when it comes to torture, I trust the lady who spent three years married to James Cameron!"
The appearance of President Bill Clinton introducing the film Lincoln was pretty cool, too. But that was about as interesting as it got. So now for my comments on fashion.
ALL AROUND BEST DRESSED WOMAN
Julienne Moore-Dressed in a custom made Tom Ford, the front of the dress was exquisite. Loved her beehive hair style. See, I told you bumpets come in handy. Wasn't loving the view of the dress from the back though. Earrings by Bulgari were Amazing!
HONORABLE MENTIONS
Claire Danes-beautiful Red dress, incredible body just one month after giving birth.
Jessica Chastain-magnificent seafoam Calvin Klein dress looked fabulous against her skin and hair
color. The top of the dress needed to be fitted more to her body. Harry Winston
bracelet was to die for. (FYI-Harry Winston was just purchased by SWATCH)
Olivia Munn-Beautiful turquoise beaded Armani gown and Chopard necklace were off the charts.
She rocked it.
Carey Lowell- Richard Gere's wife wearing a simple red Valentino. Personally, the best looking
woman at the globes.
WORST DRESSED WOMEN
Naomi Watts- even the terrible rust Zac Posen with train could not ruin her luminous skin, face, and
hair.
Nicole Kidman-for someone I used to often consider as one of the best dressed, she now looks horrid
all the time. The botoxed forehead and the netted/studded Alexander McQueen just
did nothing for her. She needs a new stylist. Her hubby is really cute though!
Taylor Swift-eggplant color dress and dull haircolor didn't flatter her.
Lena Dunham-another eggplant Zac Posen. The dress itself was nice. However, she seemed to be
wobbling in her shoes and struggling with the length while going up and down steps.
She couldn't carry it off.
BEST LOOKING/DRESSED MEN
I can't really comment on their fashion, but overall the best "easy on the eyes" guys are:
Bradley Cooper-hands down, this man is beyond good looking!
Richard Gere-as he ages, he gets even better.
George Clooney-always looks great.
Ryan Seacrest-dressed impeccably in Burberry Tux.
QUESTIONABLE LOOKS-COULD GO EITHER WAY
Anne Hathaway-2 piece white beaded Chanel. Looked too much like Liza Minelli. She needed a
great necklace or a fabulous pair of earrings. Is she pregnant?
Lucy Liu-you either loved the Caroline Herrera gown or you didn't. You either loved her braided hair
or you didn't. Didn't.
Kate Hudson-there was a lot of discussion about this dress. I thought she looked like a 70's drag
queen. Others loved the dress-you decide.
Kerry Washington-another much discussed dress. Looked great on her, but her pin straight hair didn't
seem to clinch the look. Also, didn't love matchy- matchy shoes and purse.
Katherine McPhee-drop dead body donned in black Theysken's Theory. Perfection.
