Goodbye 2018-Hello 2019

As the new year approaches, I want to wish all my friends and family a Very Happy and Healthy New Year. The end of the year is a time to reflect on the past twelve months, take stock in our lives, and be grateful for those around us. I thought this would be an appropriate time to share some of my favorite quotes.

FAMILY, PARENTING, CHILDREN, LOVE

1) If you are a parent recognize that is the most important calling and rewarding challenge you have. What you do everyday, what you say and how you act, will do more to shape the future of America than any other factor.  Anonymous

2) A man or a woman is simply the by product of their childhood. All their standards and every shred of their characters are formed in their homes by their parents....the man I become will be a reflection of who my parents were.  Pat Conroy

3) There's no point in being grown up if you can't be childish sometimes. Anonymous

4) Family are the people who must never make you feel ashamed. You are wrong. Family are the people who must make you feel ashamed when you are deserving of shame. Jonathan S. Foer

5) Dealing with growing children is like being in a batting cage with ball after ball being thrown at you. You hit the balls you can. Amazingly, the score gets kept for a very long time.   Allen Shawn

6) All families are psychotic. Everybody has basically the same family-it's just reconfigured slightly different from one to the next. Meet my in-laws one of these nights.  Douglas Coupland

7) Raising children is like waging a war. There will be triumphs, defeats, casualties! Bernie Mack

8) The loveliest fairytale of childhood is that everything happens in order.  Philip Roth

9) Love is my decision to make your problem my concern. Robert Schuller

LIFE, HAPPINESS, MORALS, EDUCATION

1) No one else can give you happiness after you become an adult. Happiness is self derived and self created.  Ellen Gilchrist

2) If you do the right thing well, you avoid futility.  Dr. Paul Farmer

3) Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest.  Mark Twain

4) The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will.  Anonymous

5) The only thing more expensive than education is ignorance. Anonymous

6) Q. What's the difference between ignorance and indifference
    A.  I don't know and I don't care.   Saul Bellow

7) Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something.
      Plato

8) I would love to be more patient. In fact, I would love to be patient. Manolo Blahnik

8) We do not do what we want, yet we are responsible for what we are. Sartre

POLITICS, LITERATURE, AND MUSIC

1)  When something is bothering me, I seek refuge. No need to travel far; a trip to the realm of literary memory will suffice. For where can one find more noble distraction, more entertaining company, more delightful enchantment than in literature? Barbery

2) One of the penalties of refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your
inferiors. Plato

3) Without music, life would be a mistake.  Friedrich Nietzsche

4) There's no spectacle that is as terrifying as the sight of a guest in your house whom you catch staring at your books. Not because the browser is going to criticize your reading tastes, but because you fear he's going to ask to borrow a book.  Roger Rosenblatt

PAIN, AGING, DEATH

1) Pain is inevitable, Suffering is optional. H Murakami

2) We mustn't forget old people....And where's the joy in these final hours that they ought to be making the most of?  But if you dread tomorrow, it's because you don't know how to build the present. Barbery

3) Maybe all one can do is hope to end with the right regrets. Arthur Miller

4) The only infallible truth of our lives is that everything we love in life will be taken from us.
     Dave Eggers

And a Final quote from One B:

You do it well, you get the fame. You screw up, you get the blame.

Peace Out-One B

December-A time for the movies, NYC shows, hot chocolate and hunkering down to binge watch some television

The cold weather is setting in and we all will have lots of time to catch up on our favorite shows and movies. Before you hunker down you should consider gathering up some libations. Head over to the Jersey Artisan Distillery at 32C Pier Lane West in Fairfield, N.J.
They originally produced Busted Barrel Silver and Busted Barrel Dark Rum. However, they have now created a Sorghum Whiskey(86 proof) which begins like a rum and is aged like a bourbon in a new white oak barrel. They also make coffee infused Morena Rum and Hard Ice rum infused Sorbet. This sounds like a perfect alternative to Egg Nog during this holiday season.
Tours and tastings happen the second Saturday of each month. Go to their website for more tour information and where in N.J. you can purchase their products.
If you prefer some hot chocolate for cold winter nights, try and obtain Kate Weiser's Chocolate Carl the Snowman. It is often sold out on Amazon and at Neiman's. This is a great gift for kids. The snowman has a belly full of hot cocoa mix and a head full of marshmallows. Place him on top of a pot of heating milk and he dissolves into delicious hot chocolate that serves 5-8. This is a great gift and it is fun and delicious. $38.
Now that we have our beverages ready, let's discuss the television shows I have seen and want to see during the next few months.

NETFLIX

The Kominsky Method (watched all episodes). Series created by Chuck Lorre. Starring Michael Douglas as Sandy Kominsky, an aging acting coach and Alan Arkin as Norman Newlander, who is Kominsky's longtime agent. Fabulous-highly recommend it.

House of Cards- (watched all episodes). Season 6 is sadly and correctly without Kevin Spacey, but Robin Wright is just as diabolical portraying the President as he was. This season has a star studded cast: Michael Kelly, Campbell Scott, Patricia Clarkson, Greg Kinnear, and Diane Lane. I really enjoyed this. Recommend it.

I'm Sorry-(watched the first 3 episodes). A sitcom about a comedy writer who is also a wife and mom. I think the series is very funny and I especially found the first ten minutes of the Episode 1 hilarious. Give it a try. There are lots of laughs.

Private Life (movie)- I don't think I watched the entire movie as of yet-can't remember! About a older couple coping with infertility. Starring Kathryn Hahn and Paul Giamatti. Worth a look.

West Side-(haven't watched). Reality series about musicians who share the spotlight and pursue their dreams. If you enjoy music and reality t.v., then I suppose you would enjoy this.

Bodyguard-(haven't watched). This was recommended to me and sounds intriguing. It is a story about a military Vet who thwarts a suicide bomber from blowing up a train. Now a hero, he is promoted to protect a conservative politician. Looking forward to binge watching this one.

AMAZON PRIME

Homecoming-(watched all episodes). Julia Roberts and Bobby Cannavale star in the series seemingly about a caseworker for a facility that helps to transition soldiers back to civilian life. Watch this-it's very good. I recommend it!

Catastrophe-(watched a few episodes). A comedy about the romance of an American man and an Irish Woman that takes place in London. Not the top of my list, but cute.

Jack Ryan-(watched first episode). Taken from the Tom Clancy Novel, this thriller is about a former U.S. marine who will ultimately become a CIA analyst. John Krasinski stars. This is good, especially for couples who want to watch something together for a change.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel-(watched all of first season). All of us are anxiously awaiting Season 2 which airs Dec. 5th. This is a must see series. Totally delightful-LOVE.

HBO

Dirty John-(originally a hit podcast which I listened to.) Currently airing on HBO and although I know the story, I find it very interesting. Connie Britton and Eric Bana star in the series which is about a lonely interior designer who finds love with a charismatic, charming doctor. Her kids suspect is he a bad dude right at the outset of their relationship. But is he? I recommend this.

SHO

Escape from Dannemore-(I have not watched any of this yet). Based on a real life prison break, it stars Benicio Del Toro, Patricia Arquette, and Paul Dano. An employee of a prison helps two inmates escape after falling in love with one of them. The final episode is directed by Ben Stiller and is supposed to be fabulous. So I will watch this for sure.

MOVIES AT THE THEATER

Green Book-Dr. Dan Shirley is a world class African American pianist. He hires a racist white man to become his driver. Vigo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali are extraordinary as the main characters. Run don't walk-movie of the year!

Widows-Despite great reviews, I found this to be a bit ho hum. Has an all star cast including Viola Davis and Liam Neeson. The plot is about a police shootout that leaves four thieves dead, and what their widows decide to do when they are left in debt. Entertaining, I guess, but wait to watch on demand.

Creed 2-Sly Stallone is now the trainer for Apollo Creed's son, Adonis. I loved this movie because I am now watching the Rocky series with my 6 year old. After introducing him to Rocky 1 and Rocky 2, we went to see this. We both enjoyed it immensely. Take the kids if they like boxing!

NYC SHOWS

To Kill A Mockingbird-This is by far one of my favorite books and one of my favorite movies. The story is forever indelibly etched upon my mind. It is a true masterpiece and I was so looking forward to this adaptation by Aaron Sorkin. However, I didn't like this sophomoric production at all.
The portrayal of Scout was horrid. She was way too old for the part and was shrill. Jem was a terrible actor and brought nothing to the role. Dill, who was a favorite character of mine in the book, showed no complexity or character development in the play. In fact, that is how I felt about most of the characters including Calpurnia, the maid;  Boo Radley, the mysterious neighbor; and Jeff Daniels as Atticus Finch. I know this play got some good reviews and many of the group I saw it with, enjoyed the play. So go see it and decide for yourself. You may love it!

The Waverly Gallery-I was so looking forward to this show as well. With an all star cast including Elaine May, who was amazing as an old woman with progressing Alzheimer Disease; Joan Allen as her daughter, Lucas Hedges as the grandson and Michael Cera as an artist; I expected a fabulous show. Everyone besides Elaine May was so subdued-they barely acted. It was a flat production with mediocre acting that could have been played by amateurs. We were disappointed after the first act and kept hoping the second act would be better. But, it was just as bad as the first act. I do not recommend this.

Downstairs-I am seeing this Wednesday. Starring Tyne Daly and her brother, Tim Daly. The play is about siblings that have a dysfunctional family relationship. We can all relate to relatives that are quirky. But this also examines domestic abuse and ties that bind us to each other. I am looking forward to watching these two performances, and hope this is a better production than the above two I have seen.

The Ferryman-Directed by Sam Mendes. Has won a zillion awards. About a reformed IRA activist and his family. I know nothing about this except everyone says it is a must see. It is 3 hours and 15 minutes, so make sure you pee before it starts! Seeing this play next weekend, so I will let you know my thoughts.

Crinkles and Bonies

In the past month I have had the misfortune of several family members (spanning form the ages of 15 months to 94 years) needing some type of medical attention.
Truthfully, the stress you experience when your spouse, grandchild, parent, or child becomes ill cannot be underestimated. It doesn't matter how minor or major an issue-it causes anxiety and worry.
Having had my fair share of family members that have sought expert medical attention for their various issues, I would like to share my recent observations and thoughts.
FIRST AND FOREMOST-I don't care how brilliant a Doctor is, or what schools he/she attended. They are only as good as their front desk and nursing staff. In a dire situation, one must be able to consult with the doctor quickly or be able to get in to see the doctor as soon as possible. ( I am not referring to a situation where you clearly should be calling 911).  If the desk is not compassionate; or trained to ask relevant questions; and/or smart enough to relay the message to the doctor: you are SCREWED-period. My rule of thumb: I have to love the way the Front Desk operates and consistently treats the patient. And, this essentially goes back to the Doctor and his instructions to the staff.

SECOND-Every patient must have an advocate. It does not matter how young, how old, or how alert/ or of sound mind they are-there must be someone else listening to what the doctor is saying. When you are having an issue, it is hard to focus on the doctor's evaluation, instructions, and diagnosis. I always like to bring my spouse or a daughter with me when I have a major medical issue to make if it is in regard to a change in health, or a medication, or upcoming surgery. (No-I don't take someone to my teeth cleanings or the podiatrist!)

THIRD-Get more than one opinion if this is something serious; requires medication you are weary about, or the physician is suggesting imminent surgery. I often get several diagnoses and see how the various specialists line up with the suggested treatment of the first Physician. I can't begin to tell you how many times surgery or a medication was suggested to me, and I didn't go through with it. And it turned out to be the absolute best decision for me to remain conservative. Again, I am not talking about taking the decision to take mucinex vs. advil!

FOURTH-Arm yourself with a little knowledge. Too much internet research can make you crazy and have you imminently dying, so be careful with the computer. But, you should ask intelligent questions. Come prepared and have your meds written down, and your questions written down. Ask about what tests would better help evaluate the illness. Ask about what medications and diet you should you start or stop during this illness.

FIFTH-Discuss the issue with friends (if you feel comfortable doing so). Someone always knows
THE BEST DOCTOR for the issue. Someone can get you into the see the Specialist faster instead of waiting 3 more months. Be willing to accept help from others. Yes, it  is uncomfortable to ask a favor of an acquaintance or a friend of a friend, but I know I would do the same for someone else. Do not be afraid to reach out and ask for help-it truly saves lives. In more than one instance, it has helped my family and we are forever grateful to those who went out of their way for us.

SIXTH-Weigh your options. Think about the best possible solution for YOU. Don't rush to do a procedure if is not absolutely necessary. Sometimes what a friend or relative would do in a similar situation isn't necessarily right for your specific ailment.

SEVENTH-Make your homes safe. If you have infants and toddlers around, install gates, childproof latches, bolt your dressers, bookcases, and large TV's to the walls. Remove glass objects, poison/pills, etc. that are under sinks.
If you are aging, or have elderly parents, install shower, tub, and toilet grab bars. Remove all area rugs. Put rubber grips on the floors of showers and baths. Buy medic alert necklaces and keep them charged and wear them.

EIGTH-if you can afford it, invest in Long term care insurance. Today there are great products out there by Prudential that offer Life insurance benefits combined with long term care benefits. You use the long term care if you need it, or it remains as life insurance with death benefits if you don't. Everyone thinks they'll never need long term care. But, if you have had an aging parent who needed around the clock care or had an illness that lasted for years, you realize how important a long term care policy is. Make sure you have the option of staying at home with an aide OR going into a facility depending on your preference. Believe me-this is the best way to avoid being a burden to your children. It is a gift to both you and your children.

FINALLY-Everyone wants to fiercely hold on to their independence. The best way to remain independent is to accept HELP. Ultimately, this will prolong your life and make the quality of your life infinitely better.

{My six year old grandson, Max, recently asked me: " Nonni, why do you have so many crinkles? I asked, do you mean Wrinkles? He said YES! And I responded , that is what happens when you get old!"

Recently, one of my oldest friends told her toddler granddaughter, "Ida, what beautiful soft skin she had. And her granddaughter replied, But, Soffie, why do you have so many bonies on you face and hands? Again, my friend replied: because that's what happens when you get old!"}

Yes,we are all going to grow old eventually- and, that is so much better than the alternative!!!! Live every minute like it matters! Keep moving and enjoy life!
Now a major shout out to my daughter and son in law, who are pregnant with number 2!
So thrilled to be on the cusp of being a Nonni for the 5th time! It's the best job in the world.
Peace Out-One B

Welcome Will!

A few weeks ago I was blessed with my fourth grandchild! I can unequivocally say that there is no greater joy in this world. Of course, my Wedding day and the Births of my two girls rank right up there, but a grandchild is completely unique. It is amazing to watch your baby parent her baby.
For those of you that have not yet been blessed with becoming a grandparent, it's hard to describe the emotions. And for those of you that have been blessed already, you will recognize all that I feel.
First let me site a quote by Frederick Douglas: In reference to raising children, he says:
"It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken (wo)men.

I trust that my girls and their husbands, who are bright, accomplished, incredible people will do their best to raise moral, strong, curious, and kind children. Where I come in, is to hopefully supplement those values; to increase their joy of life, to keep them engaged and curious about everything on this planet. I admit that in this world of smart phones, I pads, and television in every room that this can be a bit challenging. I try hard to communicate at each meal that we are together. No one should be looking at their phones and often parents and grandparents are the rule breakers. We must consciously set an example for the children and communicate with one another. And during bottle feeding, talk to your baby. Don't look at your phone. They can follow your voice and listen to you sing. I see Will responding to sound all day long. Believe me, it is so important!

But most of all, I think a grandparent should show love unconditionally. No strings attached. I want to spoil them rotten, but teach them right from wrong at the same time.
Be kind to everyone. Cherish everyone's differences. Don't bully. Don't tattle. Be Respectful.
Study hard.
Don't lie.
Love School and Learning.
Love Camp and Playing.
Value Friends and Relatives.
Look people in the eye and say hello.

I want to keep them safe (that means no Halloween Candy that can be unwrapped and rewrapped!), Take my hand when you cross the street, and don't run away from me in a parking lot.
Know your phone number and address. Don't get into a car with a stranger.
Don't jump in the bathtub! Don't jump off furniture! Don't swing from the chandelier!

I want to be there for them always. I want to listen and really hear what they say. I often ask how was your day? Now tell me the rose of the day-tell me the thorn. I want to encourage them to be confident in who they are and what they want to do.  I want them to always have fun with me.
But most of all, I want to be in their hearts.
And I want to be in their lives for as long as I can.

Each and every minute I spend with my four grandchildren is a blessing. I cherish them and how they have changed my life. It is an honor to be called Nonni.

October-My Favorite Month

October is the reason that people who love the change of seasons, live in parts of the country that have all the seasons. It is by far the most fabulous time of year: there are the baseball playoffs (what is better than a Yankees/ Red Sox series-GO YANKEES!); the world series; football; leaves changing to beautiful colors; and of course, Halloween! Can you imagine a better holiday than one that allows you to dress up in a fun costume AND eat a ton of candy?
As Van Morrison says: "And all the night's magic seems to whisper and hush
And all the soft moonlight seems to shine in your blush"

I have lots to report on: First I will discuss NEW PRODUCTS:
1) Shingrex-the newest Shingles shot. A newer version which is said to be 90% effective. It is given
in a 2 dose series administered between 2-6 months after the first shot. The old shingles shot
Zostavax was only 50-60% effective. If you got Zostavax, it is still recommended to take the
Shingrex vaccines. It is in high demand and not easily found these days. Many places are out of it.
2) Hair Mists-the newest craze is hair mist in lieu of perfumes. Some really nice scents are: Gucci's
    Bloom ($45) and Tocca's Cleopatra ($28).
3) Red Lip Balm/Powder Duo-Chanel makes this duo in three shades. The cost is $37. This is a
limited edition that features a matte powder that can be worn alone or mixed with the moisturizer
balm for a blurred effect on either cheeks or lips.
4)Indochino-a new men's store in the Short Hills Mall and with several locations around the country.
"Your suit your way." Custom made suits starting at $369.00.
5)Thrive Brilliant Eye Brightener- helps make you look like you had an instant eyelift. Comes in two shades. $24 and available only on line.
6) Augustinus Bader Rich Cream-if you are going for the big bucks ($265) you should try this! This
Professor has developed gels for burn victims. This product boasts no need for serums or toners. If
you use this moisturizer both day and night, it supposedly activates the body's own systems to
     repair and regenerate.

FOOD
1)Randall's BBQ-359 Grand Street, NYC.  Supposedly the Pastrami Sandwich is off the charts. $16.
2)JG Melon's -1291 3rd Ave., NYC. Known for the best burgers and cheesecake. Haven't been there
in years. Average price of a burger is $12 and the cheesecake is $8.25.
3)Do-550 La Guardia Place, NYC. One scoop of cookie dough goes for $4.00. Kids love it!
4)Primo Mercato-opening very soon in the Short Hills Mall. New Italian Restaurant opening and
replacing Joe's American Bar and Paparazzi.
5) DP's Pub-732 River Dr. A, Garfield. Divey spot recommended for mussels, shrimp, scallops and
clams prepared in a variety of ways. Can't wait to try since I no longer have an allergy to
    shellfish!
6)Antika-578 Bloomfield Ave., Montclair. Mediterranean menu. Looks delicious. Reservations
   accepted. BYO.
7)Montclair Social Club-499 Bloomfield Ave., Montclair. Great menu with nibbles or entrees.
   Looks interesting.
8)Samba-7 Park Street, Montclair. Lovely Brazilian Menu offering vegan, beef, chicken, and fish.
   BYO. Reservations accepted.
So lately, I having been craving linguini with white clam sauce. After doing a little research I have
decided to try these restaurants that tout theirs as the best:
Paesano-136 Mulberry Street, NYC. Reservations accepted.
Da Nico-164 Mulberry Street, NYC. Reservations accepted.
Arno-141 West 38th Street, NYC.

PLACES
I have just one new spot to suggest taking your kids or grandkids to-it is the :
1)National Geographic Encounter Ocean Odyssey. This venue simulates us feeling like we
are underwater with all the creatures that inhabit the sea. You can purchase tickets and the time
and day you prefer in advance. This is strongly suggested.

NEW PODCASTS
If you are yearning for something to listen to while driving, walking or training to your next
destination, try these two new podcasts:
1)Countdown to Capture-Actually solving real life crimes in real time. Newport Police Dept.
2)Richard Clarke's The Future State-About Foreign Relations and how trade issues will impact the
    midterm elections.

INTERESTING NEWS STORY/TIP ON CBS
If you have an emergency and need to call 911, pay attention! If you have a landline, 911 can access your location easier than from your cell. But, if you call 911 from cell, try to give your location FIRST.And then you can discuss in detail what the emergency is. This will save responding time and hopefully lives.

BOOKS
PRINCESSES SAVE THE WORLD-the sequel to Savanna Guthrie's and Allie Oppenheim's
first book (Princesses Wear Pants). These are nice gifts
for all the little girls out there (especially with the present
political climate in regard to Women).

MOVIES
1)A Star Is Born-Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga. Out today. Phenomenal Reviews. Can't wait to
   see it!
2)Colette-Keira Knightly. About a woman who ghost writes for her husband and doesn't get the c
credit. Sounds a lot like The Wife that starred Glenn Close recently.
3)First Man-opening next week. Astronauts and the story of first men on the moon.

TELEVISION
Monday-8pm Channel 5. The Resident. Don't like it. Fair medical drama. Can't watch Emily
                                          Van Camp.
9pm Channel 5.  911. Like this one but miss Connie Britton. Not a fan of Jennifer Love
Hewitt, but like the show. Very graphic-weak stomachs beware.
10pm Channel 4.  Manifest. When a flight lands after some turbulence, the people on board
discover they've been missing for 5 years. Like it
10pm Channel 7.The Good Doctor. Freddie Highmore is fabulous as a young surgeon with
                                           Autism. Love it!
Tuesday-9pm Channel 4.This is Us. As I mentioned before, I hate this show. Sappy, Sad, and
manipulative. Simply horrid-but I'm the only one who thinks this!
10pm Channel 4. New Amsterdam. Another medical drama. Inspired by N.Y. Bellevue
Hospital, the oldest public hospital in the U.S. Like this one a lot.
Wednesday-8pm Channel 4. Chicago Fire
                    9pm Channel 4. Chicago Med
                   10pm Channel 4. Chicago PD
9:30pm Channel 7. Single Parents. Cute, nothing special. maybe a bit annoying.
10pm Channel 7. A Million Little Things. Like this one. Worth a look.
Thursday-9pm Channel 4. Will and Grace. Don't think this holds up anymore. Boring.
9:30pm Channel 4. I Feel Bad. Thought I might like it but I didn't. Not funny.
9pm Channel 2-Murphy Brown. If you liked it then, you'll love it now. Bergen is
amazing, the writing is clever, and I agree with all of its political
commentary. Opening episode is fabulous-especially the first 5
                                            minutes.
Saturday-11:30pm Channel 4. Saturday Night Live. Loved the opening with Matt Damon
playing Judge Kavanaugh. Simply Brilliant. And Kanye was
super weird as the musical guest. Adam Driver and Kanye make
                                                 strange (political) bedfellows.
Sunday-9pm SHO. Shameless. Always great. Never disappoints.
10pmSHO. Kidding. Jim Carrey is pretty amazing. Don't love the show, but he is great.
10pm HBO. Ballers. Love the Rock! Love the show. Spectacular season.

So I leave with this anonymous quote about crying babies on an airplane:

Those who get it don't require an apology.
Those who don't get it never will!

Hopefully, I'll be seeing a newborn crying baby very soon!
Enjoy this beautiful month because winter is just around the corner.

Can't Wait For Family Vacay at The Shore and Shortly Thereafter it will be FALL-HURRAY!

I was walking into Wegman's the other morning and they were busy setting up displays for Fall and Halloween. Although it is way too early for that, it still put a smile on my face. The whole world loves summer but me!  Here are my July/August lists for you to peruse.

Books I've Read:
From the Corner of the Oval-Beck Dorey Stein. Working at Lulu Lemon, she answers a Craig's list
ad and it lands her a job in Obama's Whitehouse. I liked this a lot!

                                               and scary. Liked!
Crazy Rich Asians-Kevin Kwan. Entertaining, fun, easy read. A good beach read.
A Place For Us-Fatima Farheen Mirza. First time novelist. Interesting story about an Indian Family
living in America; keeping their identity and yet, trying to "fit in".
Mrs. Fletcher-Tom Perrotta. I'll just say it's about fetishes in human behavior. Love his writing.

                                              Enjoyable.

Who is One B? Songs, Books, and Movies that I love

After suffering through months of either watching news on television or listening to the radio while driving, I had a sudden epiphany. I didn't have to be depressed anymore. I could turn it off. I could listen to music all day.  After two days of classic rock, I became happy! Screaming songs at the top of my lungs, windows open and radio blasting I have found a way to escape (for at least a short while) the horror of our immigration debacle, the meanness towards our allies, and the sheer disrespect and intolerance our country has been exhibiting each and everyday . So this is a frivolous blog - you will get to know my likes in music, movies, and books. These are still capable of bringing much joy to my life.
Here is a list of all the music I enjoy. Please don't hate me-there is no Billy Joel , Bruce Springsteen, or Rolling Stones. I like all of them, but I just might just switch the station if one of the artists below are on the radio. Here are my favorites:

Recent memorable quotes and some not so recent ones

I don't even have to turn to a reality show on Bravo anymore. The news is entertaining enough these days. You really can't make this stuff up. Have any of you been watching?  All of it is so much  juicier than The Real Housewives.....

As Dorinda Medley from NYC Real Housewives says: Say it, Forget it: Write it, Regret it!

In response to Roseanne's explanation for her racist tweet about Valerie Jarett, she said, "it was two in the morning and I was Ambien tweeting. So,  I need to ask:  Who knew that Ambien's side effect was racism? The only side effect for me, is that I get up and have a snack in the middle of the night!

In reference to Disney-Owned ABC's quick firing of Roseanne: a host on MSNBC asked: Who could believe Mickey (Mouse of Disney fame) has a greater voice or influence than our current President?
(Trump did not think Roseanne should have been fired).

Bette Midler posted her hysterical reason  on Melania Trump's (in)visibility these last 3 weeks: "Melania still hasn't been seen. 22 days. It seems ominous. Maybe she just drunk-cut her own bangs and doesn't want to upset her fans. I've done that plenty of times!!!"

Maury Povitch on fighting with wife Connie Chung: She (Connie) wants to talk it over until she wins. And then when we get up in the morning, she wants to discuss it even more. Come on ladies-Isn't that all women?

Bill Clinton said today that "he has never personally apologized to Monica Lewinsky". In a brilliant interview this morning by Craig Melvin, Clinton was definitely not contrite enough about his affair with Lewinsky. If he had just said that he regretted the affair, and that he wished he had apologized directly to her, it would be over. Rather, he portrayed himself as a victim who left the White House 16 million dollars in debt.  Oh, Poor me. In that  moment he sounded exactly like Trump who always makes himself out to be the victim. Bill-you had the opportunity to make it better; to apologize, set an example, and move forward. I am stunned you were so unprepared for the questions and you made it about yourself. Disappointing.

That being said, Clinton  went on to talk about the Trump administration and said: "Do we have the
right to change the rules?  YES"
"Do we have the right to change the facts? NO"   Here I agreed with him!

And close to that same topic, Rudy Giuliani explains why it would be a bad idea for President Trump to testify, and said; " Our recollections keep changing."  Ha Ha-that's exactly what happens to me, Rudy, when I have had two vodkas on Saturday night. What's Trump's excuse? He doesn't drink! Edibles, maybe?

As Colonel Nathan Jessup says in the movie, A Few Good Men: You want the truth? You can't handle the truth! Believe me-I am soooo ready for the truth. Robert Mueller-tell us what you got!

Thirteen Reasons Why (I can't sleep, I crave chocolate, and why I am feeling down)

As Summer approaches and the temperatures rise, I find my insomnia at an all time high. With so much to be thankful for, I know that I shouldn't be struggling. But I am. And here are my issues:

1) There have been 22 school shootings so far this year: I am tired of funerals and moments of silence. It is time for the gun laws to change. The U.S. is getting scarier. How can we protect our children? I want to home school the world.
2) The Political discord in this country. I get up and go to bed (not to sleep) with CNN causing my stomach to literally ache. The violence, racism,  prejudice, and hate that is so pervasive and swirling around us makes me yearn for a large dose of Zoloft or a move to Canada.
3) The New Jersey School bus driver who made a u turn on route 80 and caused deaths. Didn't the company vet him? He had a horrendous driving record. Why was he hired?
4) My elderly parents living all alone in Florida. Enough said.
5) Philip Roth died yesterday. One of the all time great American authors.
6) John Updike is already dead (2009). My other all time favorite author.  Both writers had the same themes, but Updike  gave us the WASP viewpoint and Roth gave us the Jewish viewpoint!
7) It's summer. I hate the heat, the humidity, and truthfully, the hot sun. Give me Fall. And did we even have a Spring?
8) My newest aches, pains, wrinkles, and my degenerative toes and feet. No more pretty high heeled sandals. Those days are long gone.
9) It's not as easy to lose those last 5 lbs. as it once was. You work out more; you eat less. And still the scale doesn't cooperate. My clothes still fit, but the body has morphed into an unrecognizable sight. Why can't French fries, pizza, and cookies be healthy for you? Goodbye fast metabolism.
10) I have no one to play Mah Jongg with, and I don't know how to play Canasta!
11) I knew no one on the Billboard Music Awards except Salt N Pepa, En Vogue, and Janet Jackson. Who the hell is BTS, Khalid, Dua Lipa, and Karni B? God, do I feel old.
12) My grandsons are at the stage that they like their Ipads better than me.
13) Yanni vs. Laurel. For the record, I heard Yanni!

In A World Where You Can Be Anything, Be Kind (UnKnown)

On my recent trip to San Antonio and Austin, I came across this sign. San Antonio is a place that has so many incongruities.
It is quite confusing that Texas is essentially Trump Country, yet 63% of San Antonio's population is Hispanic or Latino.  This is the largest majority-Hispanic city in America (as of  2010). How can this group who makes up over half of San Antonio be Trumpsters? He wants to build a wall and keep them from coming into the U.S. AND he wants to send the immigrants who have been living here for years, who pay taxes, and who lead productive lives with jobs back to their countries.
Next, as I drove on the highway from Austin to San Antonio, I witnessed so many billboards advertising AR 15's, gun clubs, and gun stores. In this city founded by friars and named for a saint, you then see religious billboards posted intermittently between the AR 15 signs. God loves you; Think God; After you die, You WILL meet God, etc. Basically, you are inundated at every turn with these Christian signs.
So, what I need to know is why these religious "Christian" God loving people are also loving guns, hating immigrants, and hating many other groups in our society? How can they possibly want a President who builds walls, perpetrates a culture of meanness, hate, divisiveness,  bullying, abuses women, and would rather appease the NRA than choose to keep our children and schools safe?  With that being said, I will tell you I didn't care for San Antonio. And maybe the above reasons  are why.
Those aside, I will tell you a few things I did like in the Seventh largest city of America.
Of course, see the Riverwalk which is lovely between the hours of 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. This is the time you should choose to walk along the banks of the San Antonio River. It is beautiful, peaceful, and tourist free. By noon, the restaurants are booming with tourists and you can barely move-UGH, not for me. Next, Remember to go to The Alamo which was the location of a battle where Texans fought for independence against Mexicans ( the Mexicans finally overpowered them) until they gained independence in 1836,  walk through the King William Neighborhood which has beautiful historic homes from the Antebellum Period through Post WWII Era,  Visit the San Antonio Zoo which is fabulous. Finally, the only place to stay is Hotel Emma in The Pearl District. This is a beautiful boutique hotel with an awesome bar and the restaurants in The Pearl District area surrounding the hotel are fun too.
Next stop, Austin. The SXSW Conference was happening while we there so it was a bit insane. The slogan in this city, which is absolutely beautiful, is Keep Austin Weird. Be prepared to party-it's a very happening town. I loved the food, the diversity, the music, the bats-it was all FUN!
The buildings downtown are architecturally magnificent, so walk around and look up. The state capitol building is worth a trip-and take the tour. It is both fascinating and beautiful. Go to the LBJ Library and the Ladybird Wildlife Conservatory (only if flowers are in bloom)-the library was so informative and interesting. Skip the Zoo-it is chicken wire with a few rescued animals and truly a sad spot. Go to the bars on 6th Street-We loved Pete's Dueling Piano Bar; and Shop on SoCo (south of Congress) which has a few cute boutiques. But, my most favorite moment in Austin was watching the bats emerge from underneath the Ann W. Richards Congress Ave. Bridge. This happens at dusk-and it is quite a sight. As they emerge they fly into the sky and the sky literally becomes a mass of black. Totally cool. Must be amazing on Halloween Night.
A couple of restaurant recommendations:  Bouldin Creek Café for breakfast or lunch, Forthright for lunch, Juniper is a pretty spot with good food for dinner, and Fonda San Miguel for traditional Mexican on your last night. And do not miss all the food trucks for bbq and lots of other yummy street food.
O.K. - still feel like dancing when you get back to N.J.? I know of 3 places:
The Dome at The Manor-there is a rooftop bar and lounge. They have a Happy Hour from 5:30 -7:00 p.m. They serve bar food from 6-10:30p,m. and a D.J. from 9p.m.-2a.m.
Par 440-D.J. on Saturdays from 9:30p.m.-2a.m. $5 Martinis for Ladies!
Verona Inn-Bar food and Sat. nights a D.J. or live music.

Not in the mood to dance? Go for Ice Cream or Desserts at:
Sweet Kitchen-533 Bloomfield Ave. Montclair. Pastries, cakes, cookies.
Dairy Air-521 Bloomfield Ave. Montclair. Nitro infused ice cream. flaming ice cream sandwiches. Try Peppermint Fanny or Peanut Butt'r Booty.
Gelotti-571 Bloomfield Ave. Montclair. Try the Cookie Monster, Banana Oreo, Rice Pudding or the Maple Bourbon.

Until next time-peace out. One B

So much information swirling in my mind. Notes are scattered everywhere. And today is the perfect weather to hang home and send you all my thoughts. First off are my Oscar Predictions. I have seen all the movies! Let's place bets on Faye and Warren making an encore presentation Sunday night-I'm betting yes, for sure. It should be hilarious.

Best Picture: Hard to pick between Three Billboards and The Shape of Water, but I'll go with Three Billboards.

Best Director: Guillermo Del Toro for The Shape of Water. Beautifully shot and brilliantly done. And, Sally Hawkins is equally deserving of the Best Actress Award. But....

Best Actress: Frances McDormand will win over Sally Hawkins, I think.

Best Actor: Truthfully, I did not think Gary Oldman was that great in Darkest Hour. I have watched John Lithgow in The Crown on Netflix, and I felt his performance as Churchill was truly amazing. I was not wowed by Oldman or The Darkest Hour. So my pick is Timothy Chalamet in Call Me By Your Name.
However, Oldman WILL get the Oscar.

Best Supporting Actress: Hands down Allison Janney should win for I, Tonya. And I think she will, but Laurie Metcalf was awesome as the mom in Ladybird.

Best Supporting Actor: Sam Rockwell in Three Billboards. This was my favorite performance this year. He was spectacular. Hands down-The Best.

Further thoughts: I saw The Post and Phantom Thread.  Although The Post was entertaining, it was not deserving as a Best Picture Nominee.  What can I say about Phantom Thread? It could be tied as the worst movie I have seen since Stormy Monday in 1988 with Sting and Melanie Griffith; and the original Flatliners in 1990 with Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland. Horrendous.

OK-Where to eat before the Oscars...

Osteria Giotto Cafe-Church St. Montclair. Salads, Soups, Pastas, Sandwiches to go. Parking is tough and especially if you are only running in to pickup your takeout.  Known for their Lasagna.

Woodstack -Pine Brook. Haven't been, but have heard great things. Charred Pizzas, Delicious breads, and pastas. Supposedly a nice Sunday brunch menu. Full bar. Can't wait to try!

Giovanni's-Berkley Heights. Recommended highly for dinner. Make a reservation and give it a try.

Mezze-New Mediterranean in Livingston. Menu has lots of delicious options. Open for Lunch and Dinner.

Assado-New Portuguese Steakhouse in Livingston. Exterior looks lovely. Once inside it's a bit institutional. Food was mediocre and prices seemed high. Not a great combination.

Honey's-Fairfield. Tiny dive with delicious fresh food. Great for breakfast and lunch. Loved it!

Satis Bistro-Bloomfield. This town is having a major resurgence. Little restaurants are popping up near the train station and the new apartments.  Essex Junction started the trend.  Satis has a lovely menu, a great bar, and good food.

Marcus Samuelson's B & P-Newark. A very interesting menu and a great chef. Hopefully, this restaurant will draw lots of patrons. Looks fabulous.

Zeugma Grill-Montclair. Lovely Mediterranean menu with a wine bar. A bit pricey on the entrees, but you can go and order a few appetizers. Brunch, Lunch, Dinner.

Zaferon Grill-Verona. New Persian/Mediterranean restaurant. Interesting kebabs, flatbreads, burgers and entrees. BYOB.

Noble East-Montclair. Delicious, fresh Chinese food. More expensive than most other Chinese restaurants but white glove service, hot spa scented towels and lovely presentations make it worth the price. Known for Peking Duck. Give T.S. Ma a break and try this!

Closed-Above in South Orange. And Al Sogna in Montclair. Stay tuned-new restaurants coming to both locations.

Places on my NYC List that I want to try:

Upland-345 Park Ave. South
Pasquale Jones-187 Mulberry Street
Don Angie-103 Greenwich Avenue
Petee's Pie Company-61 Delancey Street
Underwest Donuts-638 West 47th Street at 12th Avenue

What to watch on Television, and What to Read, and Who to Listen to

Mozart in the Jungle-Amazon. This series grew on me. I didn't love the first few episodes, but ultimately it was a joy to watch. Gael Garcia Bernal and Malcolm McDowell are spectacular. And lots of classical music is a major bonus.

Last Tango in Halifax-Netflix or Amazon. Romantic Comedy about two widowed childhood sweethearts.

Man in High Castle-Amazon. Based on Philip Dick's novel. About what the world would look like if WWII had a different outcome.

The Looming Tower-Hulu. Starring Jeff Daniels and Alec Baldwin. Middle East Politics and Islamic terrorists.

Coming June 1st- A book by first time author, Fatima Farheen Mirza, called A Place For Us. This is published by Hogarth who just partnered with Sara Jessica Parker. They search for new authors and books that will knock your socks off. I love reading first time authors! Such a thrill.

Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics-by Dan Harris. For those of you who are gym rats but would like to get into meditating. Try this book.

The Wife-by Alifair Burke. How far will a wife go to protect the man she loves?

A new singer to listen to - Alice Merton. Go to youtube and listen to "no roots". She's really superb. Loving her.

Beauty Products and Cool Apps

Josie Maran Argan Moondrops-available at Sephora or QVC where it's a bit cheaper. Lovely oil and glow all at once. Super moisturizing.

Tarte Shapetape Concealer and Foundation-available at Sephora or QVC. Recommended to buy a shade lighter than your skin. Great product-beautiful coverage.

Josh Rosebrook Day Cream. It's a moisturizer with an SPF of 30. Pricey at $85.00. Available on line.

Maybelline Superstay Matte Ink Lip-lasts 16 hours. Ten Shades. $9.50. At CVS.

I Track Bites App-put in your diet plan: calories, weight watchers, etc. Track what you eat for free.
Like this better than E Tools from Weight Watchers.

MorningSave.com- Deals from a bunch of television shows. Recently saw a deebot vacuum and mop for $199 instead of $400! Lots of great bargains. Check out this site. Lots of great bargains.

And finally, if Comcast is out and you have no television: check out the podcast Dirty John. That's what I will be listening to tonight during my sleepless hours. The storm has disabled television and internet. So earplugs and smartphone are my only options. This is a true crime story about a possible murder in Newport Beach. Deals with themes of abuse and manipulation. I am just starting so I can't review. But it's quite compelling so far.

Till Next time-Austin and San Antonio will be the topic. Peace Out-One b
