October-My Favorite Month
October is the reason that people who love the change of seasons, live in parts of the country that have all the seasons. It is by far the most fabulous time of year: there are the baseball playoffs (what is better than a Yankees/ Red Sox series-GO YANKEES!); the world series; football; leaves changing to beautiful colors; and of course, Halloween! Can you imagine a better holiday than one that allows you to dress up in a fun costume AND eat a ton of candy?
As Van Morrison says: "And all the night's magic seems to whisper and hush
And all the soft moonlight seems to shine in your blush"
I have lots to report on: First I will discuss NEW PRODUCTS:
1) Shingrex-the newest Shingles shot. A newer version which is said to be 90% effective. It is given
in a 2 dose series administered between 2-6 months after the first shot. The old shingles shot
Zostavax was only 50-60% effective. If you got Zostavax, it is still recommended to take the
Shingrex vaccines. It is in high demand and not easily found these days. Many places are out of it.
2) Hair Mists-the newest craze is hair mist in lieu of perfumes. Some really nice scents are: Gucci's
Bloom ($45) and Tocca's Cleopatra ($28).
3) Red Lip Balm/Powder Duo-Chanel makes this duo in three shades. The cost is $37. This is a
limited edition that features a matte powder that can be worn alone or mixed with the moisturizer
balm for a blurred effect on either cheeks or lips.
4)Indochino-a new men's store in the Short Hills Mall and with several locations around the country.
"Your suit your way." Custom made suits starting at $369.00.
5)Thrive Brilliant Eye Brightener- helps make you look like you had an instant eyelift. Comes in two shades. $24 and available only on line.
6) Augustinus Bader Rich Cream-if you are going for the big bucks ($265) you should try this! This
Professor has developed gels for burn victims. This product boasts no need for serums or toners. If
you use this moisturizer both day and night, it supposedly activates the body's own systems to
repair and regenerate.
FOOD
1)Randall's BBQ-359 Grand Street, NYC. Supposedly the Pastrami Sandwich is off the charts. $16.
2)JG Melon's -1291 3rd Ave., NYC. Known for the best burgers and cheesecake. Haven't been there
in years. Average price of a burger is $12 and the cheesecake is $8.25.
3)Do-550 La Guardia Place, NYC. One scoop of cookie dough goes for $4.00. Kids love it!
4)Primo Mercato-opening very soon in the Short Hills Mall. New Italian Restaurant opening and
replacing Joe's American Bar and Paparazzi.
5) DP's Pub-732 River Dr. A, Garfield. Divey spot recommended for mussels, shrimp, scallops and
clams prepared in a variety of ways. Can't wait to try since I no longer have an allergy to
shellfish!
6)Antika-578 Bloomfield Ave., Montclair. Mediterranean menu. Looks delicious. Reservations
accepted. BYO.
7)Montclair Social Club-499 Bloomfield Ave., Montclair. Great menu with nibbles or entrees.
Looks interesting.
8)Samba-7 Park Street, Montclair. Lovely Brazilian Menu offering vegan, beef, chicken, and fish.
BYO. Reservations accepted.
So lately, I having been craving linguini with white clam sauce. After doing a little research I have
decided to try these restaurants that tout theirs as the best:
Paesano-136 Mulberry Street, NYC. Reservations accepted.
Da Nico-164 Mulberry Street, NYC. Reservations accepted.
Arno-141 West 38th Street, NYC.
PLACES
I have just one new spot to suggest taking your kids or grandkids to-it is the :
1)National Geographic Encounter Ocean Odyssey. This venue simulates us feeling like we
are underwater with all the creatures that inhabit the sea. You can purchase tickets and the time
and day you prefer in advance. This is strongly suggested.
NEW PODCASTS
If you are yearning for something to listen to while driving, walking or training to your next
destination, try these two new podcasts:
1)Countdown to Capture-Actually solving real life crimes in real time. Newport Police Dept.
2)Richard Clarke's The Future State-About Foreign Relations and how trade issues will impact the
midterm elections.
INTERESTING NEWS STORY/TIP ON CBS
If you have an emergency and need to call 911, pay attention! If you have a landline, 911 can access your location easier than from your cell. But, if you call 911 from cell, try to give your location FIRST.And then you can discuss in detail what the emergency is. This will save responding time and hopefully lives.
BOOKS
PRINCESSES SAVE THE WORLD-the sequel to Savanna Guthrie's and Allie Oppenheim's
first book (Princesses Wear Pants). These are nice gifts
for all the little girls out there (especially with the present
political climate in regard to Women).
MOVIES
1)A Star Is Born-Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga. Out today. Phenomenal Reviews. Can't wait to
see it!
2)Colette-Keira Knightly. About a woman who ghost writes for her husband and doesn't get the c
credit. Sounds a lot like The Wife that starred Glenn Close recently.
3)First Man-opening next week. Astronauts and the story of first men on the moon.
TELEVISION
Monday-8pm Channel 5. The Resident. Don't like it. Fair medical drama. Can't watch Emily
Van Camp.
9pm Channel 5. 911. Like this one but miss Connie Britton. Not a fan of Jennifer Love
Hewitt, but like the show. Very graphic-weak stomachs beware.
10pm Channel 4. Manifest. When a flight lands after some turbulence, the people on board
discover they've been missing for 5 years. Like it
10pm Channel 7.The Good Doctor. Freddie Highmore is fabulous as a young surgeon with
Autism. Love it!
Tuesday-9pm Channel 4.This is Us. As I mentioned before, I hate this show. Sappy, Sad, and
manipulative. Simply horrid-but I'm the only one who thinks this!
10pm Channel 4. New Amsterdam. Another medical drama. Inspired by N.Y. Bellevue
Hospital, the oldest public hospital in the U.S. Like this one a lot.
Wednesday-8pm Channel 4. Chicago Fire
9pm Channel 4. Chicago Med
10pm Channel 4. Chicago PD
9:30pm Channel 7. Single Parents. Cute, nothing special. maybe a bit annoying.
10pm Channel 7. A Million Little Things. Like this one. Worth a look.
Thursday-9pm Channel 4. Will and Grace. Don't think this holds up anymore. Boring.
9:30pm Channel 4. I Feel Bad. Thought I might like it but I didn't. Not funny.
9pm Channel 2-Murphy Brown. If you liked it then, you'll love it now. Bergen is
amazing, the writing is clever, and I agree with all of its political
commentary. Opening episode is fabulous-especially the first 5
minutes.
Saturday-11:30pm Channel 4. Saturday Night Live. Loved the opening with Matt Damon
playing Judge Kavanaugh. Simply Brilliant. And Kanye was
super weird as the musical guest. Adam Driver and Kanye make
strange (political) bedfellows.
Sunday-9pm SHO. Shameless. Always great. Never disappoints.
10pmSHO. Kidding. Jim Carrey is pretty amazing. Don't love the show, but he is great.
10pm HBO. Ballers. Love the Rock! Love the show. Spectacular season.
So I leave with this anonymous quote about crying babies on an airplane:
Those who get it don't require an apology.
Those who don't get it never will!
Hopefully, I'll be seeing a newborn crying baby very soon!
Enjoy this beautiful month because winter is just around the corner.
